After trying a sound card driver update called Cham508.exe and I lost my sound. The sound card is stock and was never removed. I don't think those drivers installed. It said it couldn't complete. I tried to reinstall the original sound drivers from the HP recovery CD but still no sound. I noticed my joystick is not working either. Device manager shows the drivers are installed and working for both. In sounds and multi media, general tab the sound settings are greyed out. The sound and voice tabs show no card is present and all is greyed out. The device tab-sound and MIDI devices were not showing but now they are after reinstalling serveral times but still not working. The input device does not show anything.

I tried installing a Turtle Beach Montego II card I had. The drivers installed ok in device manager and sounds/multimedia and the features of the card(on screen volume and mute)seemed to work but still no sound. I removed it and put the stock card back in.

We removed all files we could find in C/windows/system and system32 associated with the Cham508.exe update and the orginal sound files. Then reinstalled the drivers from the HP CD. Device manager shows ok and sounds multi media are ok the same as was before and still no sound and the stick is not recognized.

We tried reinstalling in safe mode too.

I also removed the files for the modem too since I was going to remove it, I don't use it. but have left it in for now. It shows yellow in device manager since the files are not there.

The sound card and joystick are not being recognized.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the links. I already tried installing the drivers from the recovery CD and that didn't work. The application is not listed for the sound card. From your links, I tried restoring a directory from the CD following the instructions. It says put in the recovery disc and restart. It says if the PC came with 2 use the second one. I tried with both the application CD and the second system recovery CD and when I retarted they did not run. The application CD as well as any other CD will auto run when inserted to the drive. I could not continue with restoring the directory. I also don't know which directory to restore for the sound card and the multi media files.

I found out how to get to the boot up for selective directories, but have a question about the windows files to recover. The HP site says to reinstall windows/inf, windows/system and windows/system32 files. I need to know if I will lose any info from doing this and what I should back up if so.
