No sound on Compaq Presario

I have no sound on my PC, I have an integrated ESS sound card. Windows say "This device is working properly" but when I try to set the volume it says "There's no sound device installed" or something like that. Thank you for your help! I already remove and reinstall the sound card.

Hi!! i have a compaq presario 5000 i have not had a proplem with my sound before! but how eva it just seem to disappear on me HELP! i have been though system then device manager, AND! it says this DEVICE IS WORKING properly!! have updated system as well add new hardware(grrrrr).
