I had to reinstall the video card driver (asus ge4 v8170 se) and sound card driver (on board, ecs k7s5a) . I then lost all sound. There is no sound icon in the system tray, there are no exclamation points or questio marks in the device manager. i already went to safe mode, removed sound card driver, had windows reinstall the drivers. when i go to Sounds and Multimedia in the control panel... the option to choose a preferred playback device is not active showing a greyed message of No Playback devices. please help me. I'm desperate

I have same problem on my laptop now! No sound, no icon. Under control panel/systems/devices/sounds games etc. It says all is well. But under control panel/sounds and multimedia/voice . It says I have no preferred device and it's all grey. I will be interested to see if anyone has advice for this matter.
