O my goodness, so much to say. I'll try and keep this as brief as possible. One day my computer is fine, the next everything is haywire.

1) When the computer loads up, it will only display in 620x480 256-color mode. If I try to change it, the computer says I must restart and I do, but the computer still loads up in the same mode.

2) To top it off, there is no mouse icon on the screen and the mouse won't work, except in safe mode. Also there is no sound. There's not even a sound icon in the taskbar. This is the second time this has happened to me.

The first time I just reinstalled WinME. I changed the video and mouse drivers and these two now work, but I still can't get the sound to work. Can anyone help me out? I have a Compaq Presario 5000. If you know of any solutions you can e-mail me at computer_freak_00@yahoo.com

Have you upgraded your video card driver and your 4 in 1 chipset drivers? This problem is often linked to video adapters not working properly and sometimes even requires a BIOS update.
Download the latest driver from your video card manufacturer.
Right click on My Computer, go to properties, device manager, expand the + beside display adapters (which means graphics cards), click on the driver listed, go to properties (bottom left), find the driver tab, click update driver, select specify the location of the driver, click on display a list of drivers in a specific location, click next, click have disk, and point Windows to the new drivers for your card and let it update. Reboot and see how it is.
Also download the latest VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers from here
http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp or, if you have an Intel chipset, download an updated ATA storage driver from http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/driver.htm
To find out which you have, go back to device manager and expand the + beside "system devices", scroll down and if there is a whole load of VIA stuff at the bottom then that's what you have.
If none of these work you may need to remove the existing video card drivers before repeating the updates.
If the mouse is still not working do the same for the mouse drivers and also extract a new copy of vmouse.vxd
start, run, type "msconfig" go to extract file button on the general tab, navigate to C:\Windows\Options\Install and find the win 20 cab (or it will be on your ME CD if the cabs are not on your PC), then extract it to your system directory to replace the one there, thus making sure it is not corrupted. Another alternative is to go to the MS site and download the latest version from there.

The symptoms you describe can also occur if something has happened to your System.ini file... if it is corrupted or missing some lines.

Go to start>>run>>msconfig

You can do this in safe mode.

Put a dot in Selective startup.
Uncheck Process System.ini.
Click apply>>ok and reboot when prompted.

You are now in normal mode even though it looks like safe mode.

Do you have a mouse?

If you do, there is most likely something going wrong with your system.ini file. There are ways of getting a clean one and reinstalling your drivers.

If unchecking system.ini helps, post back for further instructions.

I have the same problem. I dont get a pointer for my ps/2 mouse or logitech optical wheel USB mouse. I unselected system.ini and got the pointer for PS/2. looks like there are control characters in system.ini. is this normal for a system.ini file. what do i recover, the vmouse.vxd or system.ini and how? thanks for your help
