I cannot get my sound card to play sounds. It gets detected and I install the proper drivers for the SiS 7018 but unders sounds/multimedia in the control panel it will not allow me to play sound files or select a perferred device.
Here are the things I have tried:1) Reinstalled Drivers
2) Uninstalled Multimedia in add/remove - then reinstalled the drivers then reinstalled multimedia
4) Pulled out some of my hair (Seemed to have no effect on the computer)
5) Edited HKey_Local_Machine\System\Current Control Set\Control\ Some multimedia entries then I done step 2 again -This was off of computing.net
6) Ran Windocter (Norton) to clean up the registry (no effect)I have tried everything I could think of... including yelling and cursing at it with no effect what so ever...
Could someone please help me out!!
Thanks
~Rich

hello
is this an actual sound card not onboard sound. because most onboard sound list those chips.
if its an actual on boad sound card try this.
shut computer off, remove cover, ground your self to bare spot on computer frame,to kill statick electrcity. remove sound card, reboot
remove all referances to your card, from add remove drivers ect and device manager.
reboot, shut compter back off, reinstall sound card.reboot, goto add new hardware, use wirred.
if this dont work or you have on board sound.
remove all traces of sound cards drivers in add/remove. and where ever else.
and goto start, run, type regedit, goto hkey loacal machine enum key chose delete reboot.
you should back registry up befor deleteing enum key.
this will force windows to fine all the hard ware on your computer. if this dont work try your card in anther computer.
if it dont go than start shopping for new one.

What do you think caused the loss of sound. Presumably you tried a System Restore?
Did you try DirectX 8.1 Diagnostics, hear anything? Post back, I have an idea how to solve this.
Bill.

I did not try a system restore. Something happened to it and it wont work (corrupt). I will try the Direct X diagnostics. I don't know if it will work though. Windows detects the sound card but will not admit it is there.

Try opening the Device Manager(Control Panel, Hardware tab)and removing everything under Sound, video and game controllers. Then restarting.
Good Luck,
SW :)

I tried the dxdiag like Bill H H said to and I got the following error: DirectMusic test results: failure at step 6 (activating the IDirectMusicPort); HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic Failure)
I did not hear any music before gettig this error.
This problem is really annoying me now...

well rich am having the exact same problem and its f---ing reduculious get in touch tweety160@hotmail.com

Rich,
xxThis could be a long shot but, here it goes:)
1) "unders sounds/multimedia in the control panel it will not allow me to play sound files or select a perferred device"
By this last part of your statement. Did you mean it's greyed out and says No Playback Devices? If so, check to make sure its Enabled(the sound device that is) in Device Manager.
2) Also, what's listed in Sounds and Multimedia Properties >>Devices(Tab) >>Audio Devices
Like I said, a long shot:)
I'll Try

If it worked with win98 and not ME, ME would be the problem.
You could try removing the device from device manager and going to windows update site before you restart. Microshaft might find a better, ME compatible driver when you let it scan your system. This worked for my laptop.
This is really a long-shot.

well ive tryed the microsft up date it hasent done nothing or i cud just be dling the wrong thing :/ tnx

Under sounds and multimedia - playback - it has no preferred devices and is greyed out. I have a SiS 7018 Sound Driver and a Midi Driver listed under Sound in Device Manager - and its enabled. I think the problem is a corrupt ME. I am going to backup my data and reinstall ME. I have tried another sound card and that one had the same effect - not working.

i have allrdy reinsatlled me and it has had no effect at all :::( so a ne sound card is called for me thinks let me no who you get on and if you fix it

One last thing, since it worked with 98: it could be an IRQ conflict, even if it is not listed.
You could try changing various IRQ's, one at a time, in the BIOS. Make sure you write down the original settings so you can change back if you need to.
I would start with the IRQ of the sound card and then of any device sharing an IRQ with the soundcard.

It is not an IRQ confict because the sound card is the only one using that IRQ. I took the rest of the cards out and I checked the irqs and they were alright.

I hard the same problem. After a crash of my system I got a lot of errors which I fixed - only I had no sound. Although the sound card was shown, I received the same errors as you. I finally found out why when I tried to install software I got erros in mmsystem.dll. I looked in the web and found out the I have to change my system.ini. And this is what you have to do: Under [boot] put the following line: drivers=mmsystem.dll
Then restart your system - and I hope you will hear sound again as I did!
