Hi, I don't have any sound. The volume control icon is missing. I am using windows ME on a compaq presario 5000. In the device manager, my sound card(ESS - 1988) says that it is working properly. In the control panel, under the sounds and multimedia icon, the box is checked for the volume control to be on the taskbar, but it isn't. if I hit the audio tab says that the preferred device is "no playback devices", and I am unable to change it, as it is greyed out. I read a post of this same problem happening to an Alissa on June 22, anyone know if and how she solved this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Tom
here is the link to Alissa's post:

Go into Device Manager, right click on your sound card and choose Remove. Restart the computer and the drivers should be re-loaded. Nine times out of ten this will solve the problem you are describing.

Thanks for the reply, but this must be the one time out of ten that it doesn't help. Anyone else have anything?

I have the same problem that Tom has. No sound icon in system tray and no preferred device listed. Reinstalling the drivers and moving the card around to different slots didnt help. Status Device Manager shows the device is working properly. Sound card is SoundblasterPCI128 running WinME.
Appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

I also have this problem! Only mine seems ten times worse because now Windows ME isn't DETECTING my devices. I had about 7 in my sound and video category and now, I have three, with no sound. I don't even have the little sound icon.
Instead of normal sounds I have a clicking sound. My Mp3s won't play, instead I see an error "MMSYSTEM002" or something to that effect. Help me!!

have a nice day

Actually, the morning that I found my computer without sound I also found it in 8-bit video mode, with the monitor's driver uninstalled. That problem was easily fixed, I just had to reinstall the driver and change the mode back to normal. This is a very strange problem, maybe a new virus. Has anyone heard of a virus that attacks system devices? Or can anyone help me with my current sound problem, I sure would like to listen to some music. Thanks.
Tom

Thanks for all your help, I'm still having problems.
I don't want to remove any hardware myself because I'm not very experienced with computers and probably have no clue what I am doing.
Tom, the weird thing is when I started my comp yesterday morning I found that my mouse device was going goofy, and that I had not only no sound, but was stuck in 16 color, 640x480 resolution. I fixed the mouse, fixed the display controls. Still no sound. Still no outlook express, heh. Everything went nuts yesterday. My system restore won't even work :/

OK, so I took the advice from this guy in an earlier post and I got my sound back, but only to find out that I now have a stranger problem....My sound fades away, and I can actually watch the volume control go down until I can't hear anything. This reminds me of a window in my house that just won't stay up, one that I have to prop up with a stick, I suppose all I need now is an electronic stick to stop my falling volume control, LOL. Someone help.
Tom

I don't even know what to say to that LoL...I think it would be more annoying to have "falling sound" than none at all. It's like a big tease.
Thanks though.
