Windows ME, Athlon 1.4G, 512DDR,SB Live 5.1, Norton Systemworks 2002, ZAPro 2.6., Plextor CDRW, Samsung DVD.
3 1/2 weeks ago lost all sound after updating to MSOffice XP Pro.
1/ Uninstalled & reinstalled Windows Media player and Real Player. Now only have WM installed. No chord.wav sound, no internetsound, no DVD/CDRW sound.
2/ Checked for new drivers, all current.
3/ Have tried several times to isolate problem with a Clean Boot and gradual re-openings....will not Clean Boot.
4/ System constantly hangs, often during click on HTML link.
5/ System often hangs and with fatal error VXD notation VSDATA(95) 01. Will only re-boot automatically in Safe-Mode.
6/ I have run the gamut thru MS Sound Troubleshooter fixes...nothing.
7/ Cannot get a Sysedit file from ME to work the Registry.
8/ Error blue screens are the norm.
9/ Sometimes CTRL/ALT/DEL will not "un-hang" system and have to hit "Reset."Have searched Computing Net for similar problems, read them all and still no solution.
Any suggestions of a solution or pathway toward a solution? I'm on the pathway to the nuthouse.
Thanks
Wayne

hello
the vxd id video drivers.they need up dateing.your sound card it xp compatible?try removeing it.and see how system responds.
it would seam if you want to do a clean install a format with boot disk is in order.
if it dont let you reformat the ntfs partion you made need anther utility to do this.like partion magic.
or goto your hard drive maker and d/l the low leval format tool but dont use there fdisk.you can try maxtors sight for this tool it dose a few diferant drives but no garentee.
have a better day

I finally broke down and purchased Emergency Recovery System so that when I am adding soft&hardware I can set a ERS point and return to it. Apparently, Restore does not restore Network settings.
That said, I did run across a fix to restore your VXD files from your original Windows disk without re-installing your OS on the Hard Drive.
I cannot recall the fix, but I would suggest reading Mr. X's Tweaking and Optimizing Tips http://www.netstar1.com/TweakingWindowsTips.htm as a start. Don't do anything unless you understand what you read of course.
On the docs there are a list of URLs with fixes and tweaks. You might try a search of VXD re-install fix Windows.
Good luck.

Don't quote me, but I think the tweak had to do with making an install disk that somehow tricked the install cd into thinking that it had installed windows and then re-installing a cab file. But I never had to do it so I cannot recall the details.
