OS: Windows ME
CPU/Ram: 1.2G 384Megs
Product: HP/7950
Comment:

I got an update announcment pop up from Zone Alarm to dl a updated version. After I downloaded it, I went to install it and a pop up said Zone Alarm no longer supports Windows 9x, Me and some othe OS's because Microsoft no longer supports these OS's.

So what I have on my computer is the last version of Zone Alarm (free edition) that will run with ME.

Looks like MS is forcing those who wish the latest and greatest to upgrade to memory hungry, hard driving eating XP...

Yes, MS would like everyone to go out and buy XP. If and when I change OSes, it won't be to another MS product, unless maybe I can find a deal on W2K that I can't pass up.

I've recently become aware of some people trying to maintain Win9x with updates and improve upon some of them too.

They're here:

MSFN Forums -> Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack

I was never a fan of Zone Alarm though. I use trusty old Kerio 2.1.5, works fine and doesn't use much in the way of resources. It's not all that pretty though. Tiny Logger is a good add-on.

Don't worry about it. Although almost everyone will dump support for Win 9x, there will probably be a freeware program somewhere that matches ZoneAlarm's functionality. I dumped CrapAfee (McAfee) last week in favor of Avast because of this.

There's no great need to update a firewall. Just keep the one you've got (including the download in case you need to re-install it).

This is a Windows ME forum which therefore means that for their own reasons folk want to keep ME otherwise the forum wouldn't exist. Your post is about as daft as saying on a vintage car forum that folk should go out and buy the latest car. You are entitled to your opinion but should remember that is all it is.

As often as not it is the hardware that is the main difference, not the fact that XP happens to be loaded because it is current. I accept that XP is technically a better system but I see no need to change to it while I can do everything I want on this machine, which is W98SE. That doesn't consist of just a bit of word processing or browsing either!

It is ultra stable, fast (because of the hardware) but does require a little understanding. I can tailor it to do exactly what I like (rather than what MS foist on me) because it has DOS. It has not be reformatted since Nov 1999 when it was purchased and I am quite a heavy user.

When I have to change a piece of hardware and cannot get W98SE software, or when I want some facility that is not available, I shall ditch it and move on - but not before. That might be the view of those on here too. WinME can be sorted if you know how.

Right on Mr. Derek! I wouldn't trade ME for 10 XP's...

Will Longhorn be any better than resource hungry, memory eating XP?

I doubt it. Programmers have always had the knack of assuming everyone has the latest, fastest, hardware with HD's at max available. This has been the way since the dark days of DOS machines. That is why I consider that it is the hardware that probably matters most, although I respect some of the XP technical improvements (like not relying on two potty little files for resources).

As an example, the print program for my new printer took far too long to even open. I ditched it and went back to a little old program which did everything the new program could do. It didn't have the fancy skins and eye candy tho, or umpteen features which I would never use.

Unfortunately the older the computer is the more the user has to reach down to nuts and bolts level (DOS is the best example). XP and the like arguably require less technical know how - although the forum flourishes.
