My Friends computer recently contracted many Virus and spyware problems due to no protection. She had many Important programs that she had no disks for so we hooked the drive to my computer,deleted the virus's, ran Spybot and reinstalled ME without formatting the hard drive. Everything works great except Internet Explorer 5.5 nor 6.0 updates will Not install. It Keeps saying the operation was not able to complete and computer must be restarted. So we restart and the installation starts again with the same result! I feel like i'm in the movie Groundhog Day! It did give an error code once but a search of the Knowledge Base yielded a call to Microsoft at a cost of who knows how much!! The code was 0X80004005 She is taking an On Line University Course that requires Version 6.0 So I need Help if possible.. Thanks for your time Any help would be appreciated!!!

Go to: C:\windows\inf Do you have many, many inf files with 0 bytes? If not, you may have lost all the ME updates by re-installing and need to do the Windows Updates. If you do have those .inf files(thousands) let me know. Ralph

I had a problem downloading IE6 and eventually I was successful.....luck I guess. I have been told however that quite a number of PC magazines offer a free cover disk for IE6 which is more reliable than the internet download. Hope this helps!

since you have the update d/led reboot to safe mode and install the update from there.

Have a look at message 30205 on this forum and see if it is relevant to your problem. The reply from W. in response no. 2 might help you out. HTH Dog
