Tim,

You're saying, you have a 20GB hard drive, and this is where you loose me. What do you mean by, "and should only have 6 gb on it"

Your subject, "No Hard Drive space", is that something windows is saying/message, or explain a little more in detail, thanks.

There are hidden and/or system files, directories, that you will not see unless you choose/set to do so, in the folder options.

"...what is using up all the space?"
hidden and system files. A possible big chunck, if not updated and set lower, is System Restore.

I have not down loaded any new programs pictures or anything like that.
Windows is not telling me, I found out when I checked my computer and only had 1.19 GB left on my hard drive. Thank you for your time. Tim

"I found out when I checked my computer and only had 1.19 GB left on my hard drive."

Still not exactly being clear - just how have you checked?

Is the drive showing its full (20Gb) capacity? It's seen as 20Gb in the BIOS and/or with the command line fdisk, option (4) ?

If it is just a matter of a full drive, try dumping/reducing temporary internet files, system restore, etc. Also CCleaner can clear away an amazing amount of useless crud.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I went to My Computer double clicked, then clicked once on C: drive, there it shows What space I have used, and what space I Have left. (1.19 GB)
And I have deleted all my temporaery internet files and it did not help. before I go to System Restore and go back to when I bought the computer I would like find the problem. ( Could it be something that Windows ME has a problem with?)
I Thank all of you For your time. Tim (not the computer man)Thornton

.. yes, well - y'know you don't have to paste in every question you're answering - most of us have sufficient wit to follow along at home.

check your System Restore & TIF settings, perhaps they are set excessively high, also, give CCleaner a shot.

There are a number of apps that can give you a rundown on what's hogging your HDD - DiskData is one

Thanks jboy...

Tim,

Have you been to the wind_ws update site and applied the update for the System Restore? Not a bad idea, to check it at least once a month, middle. I'll show it/give a link to what I'm talking about in the KB. MSKB 290700

To check if it's installed, without going to the update site, you could do this. Things to click: Start (button), Run..., then type the following beside "Open:" qfecheck Press 'Enter' on the keyboard. In this, you can check to see if the 290700 Update has been applied. Even see if there might be a problem with an update.

Here's another link, in the MSKB. It talks of the System Restore, and should prove useful. MSKB 267951 Show how to adjust the amount of space it uses, ect. Yes, even how to disable it.

If you wanted to see, just how much space system restore is using. Go into 'Folder Options', 'View' (tab), and mark to show hidden files and folders. Then with your c:\ drive open in a window. Look for a folder named '_restore', and right-click it and click 'properties'. With what then shows, you should see how much space it is using.

You said that you've cleaned the temporary internet files. Have you cleaned the,
c:\windows\temp <<This one

Don't think there would be that much, in that folder. Never know ;-) If you've installed/updated anything, and haven't restarted your computer after. Do that first, before cleaning that folder, ok.

You're welcome and good luck

p.s. To make something clear. We did NOT mean for you to restore your computer, to an earlier time. Hope that's clear.

I believe I may be having a similiar problem. After installing a Windows XP Upgrade (upgrage from Windows98) I have FAR less Hard drive space available. I feel the reading HAS to be inaccurate. Before the upgrade, I had 8 out of 12 GIGS available. Now, I'm showing only 1.4 GIGS available. EXPLAIN: After installing XP, I tried to run the DEFRAG. The XP Defrag utility shows how much HD space you have available. This cannot be right. Whats going on? PLEASE HELP! E-mail me your answers please. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
