OS: Me
CPU/Ram: 866Mhz / 640Mb
Product: A Open
Comment:

A friend bought me his PC and what a time, I've had!!! Here the events:
1. Mcafee expired and was removed
2. CA Security Suite was installed.
3. Not enough memory, so CA was uninstalled.
4. Dialup quit working, this is when I got the PC.
5. Ran a Mcafee Removal Tool and got the dialup back.
6. CA caused issues, to munerous to count.
7. About about 8 installs/ uninstalls, CA said to remove it, the dialup worked all this time.
8. After removing CA (about the ninth time), the dialup has quit, ran the Mcafee Removal Tool again, No help. Tried doing a "Restore", but it always fails.. Must be a Me Feature..

Please Help I'm stuck, got the dialup back once, but can't now.... The modem dials once and gets a message "The computer you dialed has disconnected you" or something like that, that's what it did before, but like I said it came back.

Sorry for the long note, allot has happened and CA has been a "NightMare", that no one can believe.
Thanks
Rick A.

Stop trying to install CA! It's garbage & gets horrible reviews. And don't run Norton or McAfee either. There are a lot of freebie programs available that perform as well or better.

BTW, 640MB is plenty of memory. Actually, it's TOO much for WinME. Installing more than 512MB can cause "out of memory" errors. Either lower the RAM amount to 512MB or tweak the vcache settings in the system.ini file.

Sounds like the machine is a real mess. There's no way of knowing what kind of crap/spyware, etc is on it. How about formatting and reinstalling the OS?

Life's more painless for the brainless.

That's what I did, it was a "Clean" machine. Had to be something with Mcafee or CA. Just formatted and reloaded the OS and it works perfect, imagine that...

Thanks for all of the replies....

Thanks
Rick

I would consider the system.ini tweak mentioned in #2. You still get full use of the installed RAM.
