a friend of mine is running ME and her desk top Icons are gone. the name of it is there i.e. Explorer, but the picture icon is gone. I've right clicked on the desktop to make sure that the Show Desktop icons has been selected.. it has. is there anything else I should try?

Delete the SHELLICONCACHE file from your C:\Windows directory, then restart the pc. This could easily have become corrupt, don't worry as Windows will recreate it as soon as you shutdown and restart the pc.

This happened to me and I also got no memory left. I deleted everything I could think of that I didn't need. i went into my computer and control panel then add/remove. I removed loads of stuff such as old screen savers etc. I also restored the system going back about a month and then found that I got the icons back but when the cursor is on an icon it doesn't say what it is

Maxiel, Click on a blank area of the desktop and then move your cursor over the icon , a box with some text in it should now appear , giving you info about the shorcut. For instance ,if I minimize my page right now while Iam on the internet and then roll my cursor over a shortcut nothing happenns, however once I click a blank area and then roll the cursor over the shortcut , a box with text will appear.

Hi Nick
Thanks but I realise it's the tool bar icons I was referring to. I have desktop icons to the left side and toolbar icons running along the top. It is these whereby when I put the cursor on one, it doesn't say what it is, but it did this before things went wrong. I just did as you said and it's amazing eh? I was able to rearrange the desktop but not the toolbar
