Hi:
I just found this site yesterday by doing a google search using: "recognise secondary hard drive". I'm having a problem with that, and found a few similar entries under another thread.
I just installed a slave hard drive on my primary IDE controller, and EVERYTHING sees it except Windows Explorer. My cmos (set to auto) picked it up immediately! Using Fdisk, I created a partition and a logical drive "E:". But when I rebooted, started Windows and opened Windows Explorer, there was no E:. I've tried searching for new hardware, I checked Device Manager to see if both drives showed up - they do. I examined the properties of both drives in Devices Manager, and while there were no error messages there was a distinct difference: Properties for the master reveal that it is configured for DMA, and contains logical drives C: and D:. Properties for the newly installed Slave drive reveal neither DMA nor any logical drive.
I'm hesitant to simply click the DMA checkbox, sense I'm not sure of what that is. The logical drive box is grayed-out.
My PC came with logical drives A: (floppy), C: and D: (the master HD) and G: (the CD-ROM). I've upgraded from Win98 to Win ME just before the installation. I cannot understand why E: doesn't show up. Any suggestions?

...if it ain't broke, fix it anyway...

Did you format the drive?

As long as it's partitioned, it normally will show up in Explorer even if it isn't formatted.

can you put it in another computer and see if it shows up?

I can't seem to get to it to format it. It's like the only function that recognises that there is a logical E: drive is Fdisk. Nothing else acknowledges the existence of E:.

Unfortunately, I've only got one PC to tinker with (the other is brand spanking new, and I don't dare experiment with it $$$). I think I know someone who can do that for me, though...

So when you:

format e:

it does what?

I just gave that a try that last night. I got an "Invalid drive specification" message. Previously, I tried to simply go to the E: drive to see if I would get the "Drive not formated" message. Instead I got a "Drive does not exist" message (...words to that effect).
Well, I've given up trying to find out why my new logical drive won't show up in Windows. So, I've deleted the drive and the partition and reestablished them. Now it works. I glad about that, but it'll be a while before I stop wondering what happened the first time...

Thanks for your suggestions.
