How can I make new explorer windows open in minimized size. they open full screen now all of a sudden. IE 5.5 sp2

Ok, open the window and resize it manually.
To do this move the cursor to the very corner of the window and when it changes to a small black line with two arrow heads either side, left click and hold.
Now drag to the size you want. When resized, Close the window and re open. Should stick to the size you want.

maybe i'm doing it wrong--
I'm online. I have a window open full size. I want to right click on a web link, select "open in new window", and have that new window open minimally... like it used to. when i follow your suggestion, i can only get windows to open the same size as the one you opened it from.

Ok, now we've established what you want using "open with", try this.
You will already have a browser window open reading this.
Now use this link to right click, "Open with" And open a second browser window. Now shrink that second one to the task bar.
Your back looking at the first one, it's a full window. Close it.
Now reopen the second and Resize and position it how you want. Now press "CTRL" and Click the X (top right of window) to close.
Bring a new browser window up, it should be "shrunk" NOW "Maximize" it again.
NOW press "CTRL" and Click the X to close ...AGAIN :)
Now finally, Open the new browser window and it should open Full.
NOW you can Right click a link and it SHOULD (does here) "open with" to the size you chose earlier.
You may want to practise it a few times, seems confusing but it's not. Incidentally if you want to revert back to having it open full again, maximize it MANUALLY, "CTRL and [X, top right of screen] exit the first window and then do the same for the second one.
Re Open >> choose "open with" and it should open in full screen again.
And SMUOD:) have you got this one on your site ? ...cos it's a pain in the arse to write down and not point to.

speaking of practise ...Tsk Tsk :|

Not at my site but ive bookmarked this page.. When i get back from work ill code it/upload it with the name "Viking" under it :).
This questions gets asked by everyone at one point or another.. not sure why i never thought of it.

Viking,
Im creating the howto for this but i have a question.
After resizing to get the shrunk window.. All my new windows open shrunk when i right click/open in new.. This is what we want.
But.. any new window i open via the IE shortcut also opens shrunk, then i have to maximize it.. Is it supposed to open shrunk? If not what am i missing.
When i want to get my new windows opening a certain size.. I close all windows but one. Then i resize it how i want.. then i close it with the X [no control key, no extra windows]. After that all new windows.. from the explorer icon or new windows.. opens the size i set. 25% or 50% or full whatever i set.
My question is.. is it possible to have windows launched from the quicklaunch icon set to open a certain size.. and have new windows launched from rightclicking.. open a different size.
So im clear.. i know that if i set windows to open 25% of the screen.. I can launch a window.. then maximize it.. and all the new windows will still open 25%. The 'problem' is that i would have to maximize the first window each time i go online.
This isnt a big deal.. just thought it would be cool if i could have a different setting for each.

SMUOD:), I'm getting mixed results on this, so i'm looking for an article and a thread i remember a while back (needless to say i didn't bookmark them). I'll be back when i found em.
But on face value there seems to need to be a bit more to those instructs. It could just be me and this machine so i'll go check a friends clean install as well.

Viking,
I remember some of the threads also but i dont have them bookmarked.
The instructions at my site seem to work for me in XP but i cant test them on any other OS right now.
Following your instructions gives me the same results. Maybe different for ME?
Let me know when you get a chance.. i aint going no where :)

Just to go back to your point about different settings. I can't see anyway where you could do it. But if you were really into the idea, then you could check these out.
Internet Explorer Administration Kit 6 Service Pack 1
And the bit here in this freeware product where it says - setup rules for different windows.
And as far as the ME i'm on at the moment is concerned you need to use "CTRL" to make the windows stick to the size you resized to.
Eg, if i follow your method it all works swimmingly until i come to either use "open in" or quicklaunch ...it just doesnt remember if i don't press "CTRL" & then X
So, i would say theres two different sets of instructs need writing. I would check 2k as well - but ive broken it :p
I'll fart about more later and post back on this thread.

Viking,
Since my site revolves around ME im going to use your original instructions. Thanks for the info.. i broke my 2k about a week ago :). 2 lazy to fix it!

Ok.. heres what ive done.. I created two new pages.
One with your directions.. to open in new windows smaller. And the one i did that allows you to reset all the windows to open the same size.
What i need from you [if your willing :)].. is the rest of the instructions for windows me.. to add to the page i did. Like holding ctrl etc. Im not at home this week and i only have my notebook with me so i cant test it myself.
On XP.. i dont have to hold ctrl. Your instructions in response #1 is exactly what i do in XP to change the setting for new windows via quicklaunch or rightclick/new windows.
Thanks for sticking with me Viking.. Speaking of Vikings.. have you seen my new mascot? http://www.burzurq.com/burzurqer.html

SMUOD:) it's very nearly there for ME so it would be easier if i give you the following then you can write it into your own speak for the sake of literary consistancy on your site ....Great image btw :) :)
WITHOUT using the "Ctrl" key in ME this is what happens. I start off with a fully opened new browser window and the following settings are for every other window to open fully. I go about resizing.
1) I resize the first window, Click X -- The next window opens resized and so does the following "open in new" and IE quicklaunch.
2) I cancel [X] the "open in" and quicklaunch. And maximize the first one back using the maximize button.
The next "open in's" and quicklaunch's are resized ones.
3) From the "open in" resized one, i now maximize (using the button) and close. I then try it again and it opens resized once again.
Incidentally, don't ask about quicklaunch at this point ...cos it opens in full :)
4) To make The "open in" full again and stick to full. You have to manually stretch and resize to full, the "open in" window.
You THEN have to "Ctrl" and [X] the first window. and THEN do the same for the second "open in" window. This gets you back to everything opening fully again.
(Or resized depending on your preference).
I hope it makes sense to you. If you post back the finished write up i'll then use it word for word as a newbie would and then it should be clear for everyone reading it.
And i have to say i get very mixed results on this. the majority of times i do have to use "Ctrl" [X] other times it just sticks without -- ??
But in the interests of someone using ME who can't get it all to resize using normal methods, the "Ctrl" [X] combo seems to be a surefire move, as it's worked everytime on this.

Viking,
If your still following this.. http://www.burzurq.com/forum/new_window_open_smaller.html
Thats the page i put up using your instructions in response #4. I dont have access to windows me right now so i cant do any testing. "literary consistancy" doesnt exist at burzurq.com :). Were still working on spelling and grammer.
What should i call the article.. let me know if you can think of any changes.
I agree.. Redundant instructions are better than leaving something out. If its possible to change the setting with out control X on some machines but not on others.. i would rather have everyone using control X to be on the safe side.

SMUOD:), i'm still here :)
I'll tidy it up and email you. I't's more or less it. I've started a more concise version now i've watched what it does properly. Nothing major.
