Comment:
Here's what's new in DELINDEX 5.0:
* Accommodates the v4 WindowsUpdate detection engine.
* All commands are now separate lines of code,
making DELINDEX easier to read, understand, and edit.
More programming comments added for the same reasons.
* Most notes revised; new notes added.
* Deletes several application-specific junk files.
* Deletes some trojans and hijackers; deletes leftover
installers.
* Corrected *log.txt which in DOS was seen as *.txt
* Deletes *.cnt (Help tables of contents) in
C:\Windows\Help\.
* DELINDEX uses DELTA section instead of duplicating
code.
* The Registry is compacted using ScanReg /opt.
* The display of Free Space BEFORE is above
Free Space AFTER.
* Removed the switches for NOTES and ADD. ADD
rewritten and renamed CREATE.
* Menu option CREATE makes a "Superfast" StartUp disk
configured for DELINDEX.
* Long URLs in notes shortened by www.snipurl.com;
easier for you to visit.
* Frequently Asked Questions and User Comments.============================================
Thanks to SMUOD:) for posting it at his Website.

I'm having problems with this.
I type A:\>C:
C:\>delindex run
and I get this
C:\>
C:\>What am I doing wrong? I installed 5.0 over the previous version, if this makes a difference. Thanks for reading my message.

Is it on C:\ ? Make sure Delindex is on C:\
Not C:\Windows
Not C:\Windows\System
Not C:\My Documents
Not C:\Program Files
But C:\
Open up windows explorer, highlight C: by a single click and Is delindex.bat there on the right hand side ?? Should be.
When you've booted up with your ME start disk. At the A:\> prompt, type:
c:\delindex
or
c:\delindex.bat
and press enter.
You can change the directory if you want to, like you have done, by doing
A:\>C:
C:\>delindex
or
C:\delindex.bat
Enter
But I find it easier when at the A:\> prompt to just type:
C:\delindex
And then press Enter (not run or typing run)

Yes, delindex is in C:
I've tried all the ways you've suggested to access this file. All have the same result.
I get
C:\>
C:\>The previous version worked fine. I installed 5.0 over it. Now I can't seem to get the file to work. Should I try reinstalling 5.0? Thanks for reading my message.

yup, remove the delindex.bat file from C:\ (keep it in recycle bin if you want) and download another fresh one.
Or failing that, do it the manual way.
Open notepad and where it says "read the code" on the web page, click on it, and copy the entire contents (from top to bottom) and paste it into notepad and name it delindex.bat.
And then manually put it on C:\ when you save it with the . bat extension.
The download should be good though. I've not checked it yet.

I've downloaded a fresh one and it still doesn't work. I still get the same result.
I type
A:\>C:
C:\>delindex
I get
C:\>
C:\>I've tried the other ways listed above and get the same result. Maybe it just won't work for me anymore. I give up. Thanks for reading my message.

rhiannon,
Right click on delindex.bat and click "properties" and tell us the file size. Both size and size on disk. Give the KB size and the bytes size if you can.
No such thing as stopped working as if by magic :)
And if you want, I can send you the original 4.2 delindex that worked for you -- just click on my name (that's an underscore between the two words) and send me your address and I'll send you the original file. -- So you don't lose out.

I'd bet that Delindex is not on c:\.
You don't even have to bother using using a startup disk; just go to DOS with windows running, and at the C:\> prompt type dir /s delindex.bat to find out where it is. If you downloaded it to the Desktop, it won't work and you'll have to move it. (I'm assuming that we're talking about Delindex.bat and not Delindex.zip.)
One thing is puzzling: if Delindex were not on c:\ and you typed Delindex at the c:\> prompt, you should have gotten a "Bad command of file name" message.
When it's on c:\, when you boot up with a startup disk, instead of typing c: and then Delindex at the C:\> prompt you could just type c:\delindex at the a:\> prompt. Anyone using Delindex 5.0 is encouraged to make a Startup disk with the Create routine; it's much faster and easier. It will either display a menu as soon as booting is finished or run Delindex immediately (your choice). It also runs it in color.
I just tried typing Delindex at the c:\> prompt with Windows running, with a Standard Startup disk, and a "Superfast" Startup disk made with Delindex and had no problem.
If anyone else has tried Delindex 5.0 and has experienced this or any other problem, please post back.
Thanks!

I've just used it. Works fine, and I'm liking the look of it and the options so far. Neat job RM -- It's come on from it's humble beginnings.

I am trying to edit some of the code in Delindex (Like I have before to scrub some other folders). I am having a hard time viewing this in notepad like the last version. Anyone have recommendations for viewing in notepad? Font change?
+1 | ![]() |
Just knock one letter off the .bat and accept the changes, then right click to get "open with" and choose wordpad instead of notepad. It's easier on the eye.
Make the changes, accept the changes, and put the missing letter back.
You have maximized notepad erg ?

FYI, many lines in Delindex 5.0 are shorter than in ver 4.2.
Use EditPad Lite ver 5.3.0. It's free, and is much better than NotePad or WordPad will ever be.

Viking-
You can edit a batch file in WordPad. Why change the extension? Just right click on Delindex.bat, pick open with, and WordPad.
+1 | ![]() |
No "open with" that's why. Only "Open" and "Edit".
Open opens the DOS box and Edit opens it in notepad. And I can't remember where the change default text editor option is in ME.
+1 | ![]() |
.....and I couldn't remember if it was like that for everyone. Guess not by the sounds of it. :p
If you say the "open with" option is there right clicking a batch file, then I'd better look at it.
I seem to remember 7-Zip adding and removing things from my right click menu options. But didn't pay much attention to it. Naughty 7-Zip.
+1 | ![]() |
If you highlight the file (one left click) and hold shift down and right click, do you get the "open with" option?
Viking,
I haven't tried this, but thought you might want to have a look:

You could always add a shortcut to wordpad in your sendto menu. Then just right click/send to :)
+1 | ![]() |
Oh...:) I dont see a "open with" when i right click the batch file either. Maybe something to do with not having office installed under windows me on my system.
+1 | ![]() |
I have the same as rhiannon in DOS in Windows. But I have to still check it out by booting to dos.
--> I would recommend not to delete the older version Delindex which is working fine. Just rename it as [DelindexOld.bat or something similar] and you can still use it if necessary.
Greetings Smuod, how are you doing?
+1 | ![]() |
Ok here is my report:
When I download the Delindex.bat file to c:\ the problem occurs as explained by rhiannon
But when I download the zip file and exract to c:\ it is working fine.
I clicked on the bat file in c: and made Delindex boot up floppy. No snags at all.
Nice work RenMan.

Raj is right.
I just downloaded using the "download .bat" and ran delindex and get the exact same problem as him and rhiannon.
Size of file is 46.8 KB
Size of file on disk 48.0 KB
I created the same batch file using notepad yesterday (as above) and placed it on C:\
Size of file 47.9 KB
Size of file on disk 48.0 KB
I did say further up it's worth checkin the file size. So I'm goin with possible file corruption on downloading the .bat -- Blame SMUODs download machine :)
Speaaking of which ! Good to see you alive and well and visiting cyberville. And good to see the big giant p--sy cat hasn't swallowed you whole.
I don't have office installed on ME either so I'm gonna blame that instead of 7-Zip. No doubt there's a reg hack to add "open with" somewhere out there rather than installing 3rd party.
Leroi -- Thanx for the search and rescue. I'll probably give it a go out of curiosity anyway.

The correct size of DELINDEX 5.0 is 49,080 bytes. The Delindex.BAT file from http://burzurq.com/forum/delindex.html is 47,928 bytes and does not work; it is exactly as rhiannon describes.
When extracted from the ZIP file, Delindex is 49,080 bytes with created and modified timestamps of 06/01/2004 12:00 am.
Sorry about the problem, and not properly checking rhiannon's report. All of us helping each other is what's so great about this forum.
I notified SMUOD:) and as soon as it's corrected one of us will post back. In the meantime, download Delindex.ZIP. That does work correctly, as Rajan Urs and Viking stated.

Hey, great to see many old regulars on this thread.....and thanks RM.....again. Will have a go soon. btw - replied to your message about testing some months ago, but didn't hear from you. Good to hear now.
+1 | ![]() |
Thanks RM and all,
I originally downloaded the 5.0 bat file. I went back and downloaded the zip file, which worked.
+1 | ![]() |
rhiannon -- Glad you got sorted :)
SMUOD:)I don't want you not sleeping at night.
"OPEN WITH" - Adding it to the Right Click menu for all files
Tip though, when you create the exact subtree and when it says put "Openas" don't. Put Open With.
Scroll down for more options.

RenMan attempted to send me the batch file but hotmail blocked it.
Since the zip file seems to be ok i decided to unzip/upload delindex.bat from it. My FTP software was set to auto rather than binary or ascii. The file was being jumbled.
Hopefully its OK now.
Fingers/Toes crossed :)
+1 | ![]() |
I just tested it; it's OK. Once the zip file is unzipped, both DELINDEX files are identical, so it's your choice.
If you ever plan to email DELINDEX, (or if your ISP or AV software does not allow downloading *.bat files) you might want/need to consider the zip file.
There's an optional section in the code that is set to NOT work. It's near the end of Section 2, starting at line 295. Tinkerers might want to look at it, in case they want to enable it.

Just used 5.0 for the first time. It cleared out what it's supposed to, but it caused the loss of all Microsoft icons from Office, Works, etc. on desktop, office, shortcut bar, start-programs etc.
Also caused scandisk to run on startup, although there was no bad shutdown.
Not a problem because I'll just clone back the drive, but just thought I'd report the issues.
+1 | ![]() |
Suffered the same symptom's as Trev reported, system restore also ceased to work locking up halfway through restore operation although this may be unrelated to Delindex. I had to uninstall then reinstall office to restore icons, as the repair option was not effective.
+1 | ![]() |
Does it claim to work on NT/2k/XP ? ...NO !
And if you took a decent straw poll of people who use(d) spider 1.16 over time, you'd get a 30-40% return who say it doesn't even work properly on 9x never mind XP -- And I'd be first in line.
Good for logging where you've been etc but consistant first time RELIABLE removal -- not a chance.
+1 | ![]() |
For me a few icons on desktop got destroyed the first time I ran Delindex but not the shortcut itself. I had to create new shortcuts from the respective program folders again. Not much of a hassle and when I ran Delindex again it did not remove the icons.

Hello everyone,
Trev, Mick, and Rajan Urs,
I am playing around with the issue and am curious as to the version of Office each of you were using. Also, which Service Packs were installed.
Best Regards,
Mesich
