The best way to do this is by using a cable/dsl router. I use an SMC Barricade and I like it a lot. This item will allow up to 4 computers to share the same cable connection. In the back is one port where you hook the modem to. In the front are 4 ports for the computers. I got mine for about $70 on Ebay, well worth the money. It has a built-in firewall and print server also.

There is a cheaper way and that is to enable ICS (internet connection sharing) on the host pc (the one that is hooked up directly to the modem via a NIC). You'll need a second NIC installed on the host pc which the 2nd pc will attach to via a crossover cable. There are many online turtorials about how to set this up on the software side. A great source is www.practicallynetworked.com.

BTW Cox will likely NOT help you set this up if you want to enable two computers to share the same IP. A Cox tech told me that that the moment you start using a hub or router they drop all support. He also told me that I would definitely need to buy a second IP. A complete joke.
