I recently bought a Dell 4100 with WIN ME. I have had a cable modem hooked directly to my IBM Laptop NT 4.0 that works fine. I added an Ethernet NIC to the Dell stuck a hub in. My laptop still works fine. I can ping one machine from the other and visa versa but none of the share options work on ME. It does not even give me the option to share and I have the MS client for sharing loaded and sharing turned on. When I try to use home network wizard it crashes and net neighborhood gives and error. Any Ideas.

Have same network problem as Tony. Have New Micron RS 3000 (Best Buy) connected to Linksys Etherfast Router. Internet is fine. But Network "wish-ard" crashes machine with following message: VSERVER (01) +00004D75 Error: OE:028:C17579A5

Didn't know I was getting ME until machine came out of box. Thought we were getting W98. Kind of a bummer to be an experiment.

From the two network problems above and my own experiences working with my laptop and ME , I have become convinced that ME needs work in the network area. Sunday (8/27), I spent until 6:30a trying to network my laptop to my desktop system inorder to use files and to share the current internet connection. I had 98 on the laptop prior and knew that PCMCIA Nic worked fine. Once I put ME on, it would find the mapped network drive, I could go to My Computer and access the networked drive, but no matter what I tried, ME would either not see or lose the network adapter or not see the network workgroup at all. Finally at 6:30a, I reformatted the drive and put 98 back on - and the network worked fine again. There is definitely a problem with ME in this area. As a systems technician, I will recommend users to stick with 98 if you are looking to network systems together!

Haaaaaaa,

Internet connection sharing works fine!! You all have a hardware problem. You can't use a hub!! You need to do one of two things..

1= Buy a Linksys cable/dsl router!!

2= Install a second network card in the head end computer(not the laptop)

The problem is that your cable or DSL co assines your computer an identity using static or dynamic IP's....so if your machine is set with those settings what would you set the other machine to???In TCP/IP no Two devices can share the same IP address. If you use Net Boui great but then it needs to be assigned to another NIC.

$160.00 and you can have a complete and secure LAN & WAN....I love my Linksys router.
I have four machines and my wifes laptop nestled in safety from the big bad WWW.

Wayne, do you have Windows ME?

I have the LINKSYS cable/DSL router and I still get the exact same problem as what George described. I have 2 machines using the router, one running Windows 98 and the other running ME. They both are currently able to use the internet through the DSL modem, although the ME computer eventually has the internet connection freeze (it works for awhile). The problem is that I cannot network the ME machine. Everytime I run home networking wizard I get the following error:

VServer(01) + 00004D75 Error: OE: 0028: C177C905

The C177C905 extension above is not always the same the last 4 or 5 digits change each time, but the rest of the error is the same.

BTW, I also have a new Micron RS3005 from Best Buy.

Well, I have a new Dell 4100, using a dial-up modem, and tried to add a 3-COM NIC card to the Windows ME system, with exactly the same results.

Support from Dell, and Microsoft seems to be to repeat the home network instructions for Windows 98.

hmmmm, I have had the exact opposite problems than everyone here. I had 2 win98se boxes that would just refuse to talk to each other. But, after I installed ME on both of them, and run the Home Networking wizard, it worked first time, and hasn't stopped yet, even the internet connection sharing works without 5 mins of setup.

I am using SMC 100/10 NIC's and an Internal and external 56k V.90 modems (we cant get cable or ADSL here yet)

Just goes to show that ME does work, it might just not like some hardware. but you can say that with almost every OS.

just my 2c.

Dave,
If you are using Explorer try using the latest Netscape Communicator, downloaded it last night & for the first time my net connections didn't freeze.

I have a new Dell 800 and I am getting the same problem with the blue screen when I go to set up the network. The problem appears to be in the file/printer sharing. I have three sytem in the house and only one printer which is connected to this system. I have to find a fix so the kids can print their homework.

I have the same problem with my new Dell and Windows ME. I can't get File and Print Sharing to work! TCP/IP is working because I can ping the other PC on my network but I also get the exact same VSERVER error when using the Home Networking Wizard. I think it's a bug with Windows ME.

Our new Dell Dimension 4100 had the same problem with File and Print Sharing - could ping other machines, could access the internet through Linksys router, but could not share resources. Finally re-loaded the Operating System from the Windows CD, and Voila! we can now share resources. Dell support had suggested restoring to factory default with the Resource CD. Tried that, but it didn't work. Had to use the Windows ME Cd. Hope this works for others too.

This is a frustrating matter. I have four computers networked at home, and all but one work. Guess which one will not work. Yep, the Dell I got last week with WinMe installed. Can not print share, access the internet or use the network wizard. I thought it was a problem specific to my application of ME, until I read this board. I will try and reinstall from WinME CD, thanks Denise. I have nothing to lose. I already lost two days working with the know-nothings at Dell.

Also having WinME network-related problems here. We attempted to upgrade from Win98SE on our e-machine slate. During installation, we have some sort of reoccuring glitch, that can be ignored, but in the end we are unable to get the system to recognize our Linksys PCMCIA card. We are able to restore Win98SE which also restores the function of the PCMCIA card. With very few exceptions, Linksys does not appear to be able to provide WinME drivers yet. I agree it seems best to stick with Win98SE untill somebody as MS or L-Sys can address.

I just bought a Micron Millenia 2100 from Best Buy and I am getting the same Blue Screen of Death with the VSERVER error when running Home Networking Wizard. This also happens when clicking on the Remote Administration Tab of the Passwords section of the control panel. Let me know if you can help!

We also have a Dell Dimension 4100 and after inserting a Linksys network card, couldn't share files, access Network Neighborhood AND got the blue VSERVER error screen. We were relieved to find these messages after 3 days of hairpulling frustration! Decided to re-install Windows ME (as suggested above) using the CD and everything is working great now. An amazing relief. Hope this helps.

Got the same problem. Have a Dell Dimension 4100 and bought a Linksys model NC100 network card and now receive the blue screen of death whenever I try to run the glib "home networking wizard". I hate that magical fiend! So, I hope I can find a way to fix this without reinstalling the OS because I have lots of software on the maching already!

Finally. Micron put up a fix with a rather childish note saying "for those who didn't buy our network card..."

http://support.micronpc.com/Apps/specdriv.asp?Hub=OSS001315-xx&Include=

Grab the VNET.EXE and read what it says!

All fixed now.

OR. Remove the Client for Microsoft Networks, (Reboot) add the following vnet.reg keys and reboot, add the Client for Microsoft Networks (Reboot) and then YOU are set!

The following can be cut/paste into vnet.reg and then you click on it...

Bye and thanks for the clues!

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP]
"StaticVxD"="vnetsup.vxd"

Hi all,

today I got a NEW Dell Inspiron 8000
with the magic ME installed. I can now
access the internet and get the email.
However we use an NT based LAN. The performance for file access on this NT-Server
is awfull slow, extreeemlyy slow. And I have
no idea what to do. All the other machines
- 7 year old boxes ... - are mutch faster than this machine with ME on it. What's wrong
with this REDMOND stuff, or is it DELL?

I am having similar problems. I have a WinME box and an NT4 one, and am using TCP/IP with two 3Com 10/100 cards. The NT system can see the ME one with no problems... but the ME system takes about 4 minutes to open up each level of access to the NT one. (IE Entire network, then workgroup, then the drives.) It has yet to make it make it far enough to see any files. I have worked on the network settings for 2 days now, anyone have any ideas?? Markus, as for it being Dell, I doubt it as my NT machine is a Gateway, and the ME one I built myself.

Mike

Same problem here... NT box and ME box on a 100 Mbps ethernet hub (Netgear DS106)... NT box can download files from the ME box at full speed... ME box downloads files from NT box at excruciatingly slow speeds. This is with HTTP, FTP, microsoft file sharing, etc... no matter what transfer protocol, it's always slow. There are a few gripes about this on Usenet too. Clearly this is a real problem.

Uninstall Windows ME. Then gently take out the Windows ME installation disk, place it on an uneaven ledge, and break it into a thousand pieces with your boot. Congratulations you just rid yourself of the biggest piece of crap that you own.

I installed a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card on my Dell Dimension 4100 PC with Windows Millenium (ME). The card was easy to install and the driver configuration was a breeze. But when I went to run the 'HOME NETWORKING WIZARD' to set-up my network places, I kept receiving a Windows (blue screen) error advising there was a missing file? I thought it was something I was doing, and the 'Dell Resolution Assistant' thought that it was a NetBEUI configuration issue. After reattempting to install everything 3 times I decided to call Dell directly. After about 30 minutes on hold and 2 technicans I received an email with Registry Editor Updates titled 'vnetbios_key.reg'. It takes about 1 second to download, and 5 seconds to install. I would also recommend restarting your computer before attempting to run the 'home networking wizard', just to be safe. Good Luck!!
