Iam curious how important the NetFramework 1.1 patch on the Microsoft web sight is and what exactly does it do ? Iys not listed in my control panel,add/remove programs ? I would like to know exactly what is the fuction of this patch ,its a rather large download for a dial up ,so I would need to have it downloaded from a friends PC on cable to my thumb drive ,Should I just install it to the Windows Folder ? Thanks to all that reply Take Care Nick
Thank you for your advice ,Its greatly appreciated ! Iam having some problems with my apps and was wondering if the lack of the NetFramework 1.1 was the cause, you have set my mind at ease ! Thanks Nick
Still stuggling with it ,thanks for remembering ! I do my online banking and right now I can't take a chance on losing use of my PC. However there seems to be a problem with dublicate folders ,my display driver ,which wont uninstall from the control panel so I can update it ,also the TV Wonder still wont respond ,Windows Criticial Updates show as being sucessfully installed however when I scan the site again they come up as needing to be installed again ? I just fount 1900 0 K.B. inf. files in the .inf folder and deleted them ! I also took a look at the bootlog.TXT file and it appears many things fail at bootup ,listing erors ? This is a OEM install ,so I believe I know what I have to do ,its just for now I was hoping I could trouble shoot each problem till I had it back to where I want it. Iyt seems thing dont install properly? I have norton utilities and when I run the optimazation wizard ,it stalls at "conveting startup applications" I have to close down the Cvtaplog via close program box ,for it to go on to defragment drive, the list goes on ,however I wil cut this reply off now I dont want to get spanked :-) Any advice always appreciated ! Thanks Nick
Same advice as before - backup all your important files, assemble all the necessary device drivers & software, then format the HDD & do a clean install of WinME. You're never gonna get your system to run right until you do....
Jam , I hear ya ,however with a OEM install ,it seems confusing ,because all I recieved from the manufactuer was one Recovery Me CD and one floppy . All of the files are on the H.D. in .cab files ? Yea ever since I did the over the top install my Windows Explorer has double entries of folders ,the registry also ,its a cluster F%^&, I want my Windows Me back the way it was .I miss my TV Wonder ,however the dozens of updates I had installed some of which arent even available anymore etc. make that impossible .Thanks for you input ! Nick
"all I recieved from the manufactuer was one Recovery Me CD and one floppy"
So what's the problem with that? The floppy is probably the boot floppy that loads the DOS CD drivers so that you can run the install from the CD. Have you ever popped in the CD & browsed thru the files that are on it? Putting the cab files on the HDD isn't uncommon, but did you check the CD to see if they're also there?
Do you have a "real" Windows CD that you can use instead of the recovery CD? All you'd have to do is assemble all the drivers (video, sound, modem, chipset, etc) in advance & burn them to a CD. You'd also have to backup any personal data (docs, pics, etc) that you don't wanna lose...you should be doing that anyway. Then format the HDD, boot off the floppy, pop in the CD, & type SETUP at the DOS prompt. When Windows prompts you for drivers, just pop in the CD you created & install them from there. Then go online & run Windows Update. Once that's done, you can start installing all the other software that you use. Yes, it's time consuming...it will take a few hours at least & if you're using dial-up, it will probably take much longer.
This is the ONLY way you're gonna get your system to run right. How long have you been struggling with it now...weeks? You have things so mucked up that there is no repairing what you have...it's time to bite the bullet, backup your important files, format & reinstall. Apparently you're scared to do this, but it is the ONLY way!
Hi Jam , I want to thank you for the instructions you supplied me on how you would go about correcting my PC.First lets get over the ? about where I purchased the PC from and Iam sad to say it was the HSN ! I knew nothing about PC's and this would be my first one ,I bought into the sales pitch on how it was cutting edge technology yadayada ! Well the more I started learning abot PC's the more I realized I could have purchased a much better system ,this P3 750MHZ had intergrated sound and graphics . I installed a ATI RADEON graphics card and also installed a S90 Sonic Impact sound card by Diamond ,I also added a LG CD-RW to go along with the DVD-ROM it came with ! You are correct Iam a bit nervous about doing a clean reinstall ,it seems many of the patches and updates are not even available ,I had I.E. 5.5 SP2 in my ADD/REMOVE programs B/4 the over the top reinstall however now its not there and in internet explorer its only showing it as I.E. 5.5 . I cant seem to find the internet tools to download ,some downloads like the netframework 1.1 are such large downloads ,they would take forever on a dial up and my ISP would probably disconnect B/4 it completed ! The reason I tried the reinstall is because I was had lost the ability to uninstall my display driver and wanted to update it ,and was having a few other problems however they where trivial and I was for the most part happy with the system ! It came with 128 MB SDRAM ,I added another stick of 128 MB's RAM .I have no problem working with the hardware ,however when it comes to troubleshooting this type of situation Iam pretty clueless .However Iam going to get a new laptop ,(not from HSN) and when I have my internet working on that laptop ,Iam going to take the plunge and get this system back to where it should be ! I really got use to using Windows Me and actually like the O/S ,I have WinXP on a laptop at work and I dont like XP ! Thank You Very Much Nick
I like em both. I don't like WinXP's default interface, but if you tweak it & change it over to the "classic" setup, it's much more "user friendly". WinME has gotten a bad rap, but I've had no problems with it & usually install it instead of Win98SE on lower end systems. Once it's tweaked & updated, it runs quite well & IMO, it's no less stable than any other Microsoft OS.
If you need a hand with the format/reinstall, feel free to private message me.
Thank you for the offer of your help, its greatly appreciated .I was starting the process of uninstalling some apps ,the first one being the TV Wonder USB ! Well when I hit the remove button in control panel it gave me three options ,remove ,repair ,or modify ! I tried the repair option and to my delight my TV Wonder is working again ! For now Iam going to put off the format and reinstall ,everything I use on this PC is now working ,and Iam soon going to be purchasing either a new desktop or a new laptop ,so till then ,Iam leaving well enough alone ! Thanks Again ,Nick
