My computer crashed a few weeks ago and a friend of mine repaired it, but it doing so my recovery disk no longer works and so I could not get Windows Me back. He found me a version of 98 to load, which would be fine, but now my computer will not load any internet pages in Microsoft explorer after I connect to the internet. I wonder if it is the fact that my modem was designed to be used with Me and we just downloaded a generic modem driver to get it to work. I can get a separate email application to work with my modem, but no web pages will load. Kind of worthless system. Anyone have any suggestions of what I should do next? I can't update my version of Windows if I can't get the windows update page to load!

hello
try up fdateing ie to 5.5 with service pack two.
but dont get ie 6 too many problems with it in m.e and 98 is more so.
try resetting your internet contion settings.contact your isp for help with this.
and look in device manager for errors

If your connecting ok and you can see the two little computers flashing down in the bottom left of the computer their is no problem with the modem.First step is two remove any firewall software that might be on the pc in add remove programs. If still no joy.Step two Connect to the internet as usual. When it comes up in internet explorer window "Page cannot be displayed " or "Page not found" open up a dos window while still connected to the internet and type in cd.. and click the return/enter button on the keyboard.Next type in ping www.bbc.co.uk and click the enter button on the keyboard. What this will do is it will try to communicate with the bbc server. This will then come back with a responce. If it comes back with "Unknown Host" then you have a problem with winsock(file used for browsing web pages). To fix your winsock file Click on Start and click on Run-Type in msconfig-click ok-Ensure that the General tab is displayed, then remove the tick to disable Load startup group items-Click on Apply and then OK-Restart the PC-Launch the configuration utility again (Start Button >> Run >> msconfig).
Click on the Extract File button-Specify the file you wish to restore as wsock32.dll-Click on the Start button-Choose to restore from:
C:\windows\options\cabs or
C:\windows\options\install
Save file in: C:\windows\system-Click on OK-You will now be prompted to make a backup copy of the file prior to the restore. Since there is no need to make a backup copy of a corrupt file, simply click on the Skip button.· Launch the configuration utility again (Start Button >> Run >> msconfig), and replace the tick in the Load startup group items box.-Restart the PC.
· Delete the existing internet connection-and create a new one. This should resolve this issue.
If it comes back with "Request time out" then you have a proble with network components on the pc.Remove all internet connection software and anti virus software off pc.To fix the network components go into control pannel-network.Remove all the components you see-click apply-restart pc-go back into network-control pannel and add back in TCP/IP,Dial UP Adapter,Client for Microsoft Networks.click apply-restart pc.Create your internet connection and try to connect and view web pages.Enjoy!!
