negative hard disk free space

Comment:
I cannot activate my virtual memory because negative hard drive free space is reported on the virtual memory tab in system properties. I have a raid drive with 2 100 g hard drives. The free space reads c:\-8050 mb free when it should read 184gb free. This problem causes any programs that use virtual memory not to work and report low memory.

There's a MS KB article on this. Sorry I don't have more info.

Article is Q272620 and just tells you that for $'s you can get a fix that corrects the value displayed. It points out that internally Windows is using the correct values. It also notes that this occurs for drives over 32MB and that the maximum swap file size that can be set is 4GB and that the "fix" version of the module does not display a value higher that that.
Don't worry about it. That number being negative has no effect on operation. Just let windows manage the swap file as need be. (You can always check the real values being used in the System.INI file under [386Enh] section anyway.)
Your problem with programs reporting low memory has nothing to do with the swap file settings. Most likely its because you have more then 512MB of ram and do not have the required MaxFileCache=524288 in the [vcache] section of System.ini per Q253912.
