all right this is really serious. my computer just wont install any OS. when i try to install ME (boot from cdrom) it gets stuck at a file (same file everytime). so i started it up with the command promt, and copied the cd to c: drive (i have one hard drive with 2 partitions, c is formatted, d: has all my files)and tried the setup from there. it installs, everything goes fine, gets to boot screen (me logo with progress bar on the bottom), and restarts. everytime, even in safe mode. ive tried install 95 and xp and neither of those work either. (so basically im stuck using the me cd, use the 2nd option "start comp w/cd rom support" and using dos from there)

also after the install is says "boot sector to be modified, press y to comtinue", it wont accept anything but y. ive tied every key on the keyboard, and it just shows the same message again and again, unless i press y, at which point it goes to the boot screen and reboots (as mentioned above)

Why are you reinstalling? Perhaps you have a hardware problem...Ram, MOBO, etc.

Try disabling the antivirus/bootsector 'protection' in the BIOS.

If you are unable to install any version of Windows, then consider that it is quite likely due to:

bad hardware

user error

(or perhaps both)

We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology

What did you do prior to this happening? Could it be a dirty CD? Have you checked your RAM or done any kind of diagnostic check??

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

actually at first i did think it was a bad CD, until i tried copying all the files to my hdd, and that worked (it even got past all the files), but it still rebooted at the splash screen.

In response to jboy, i will try disabling the protection, but i dont think its a bad hdd cuz everything else on it works, and i know its not a bad cdrom because ive tried several and i get the same message everytime. (ive tested the cdroms on other systems and they work just fine).

What is MOBO? if its the motherboard its been checked and i dont think its got any problems

what kind of diagnostic check can i do? to find out if RAM is bad? (its got 2 128 DDR's and two i believe theyre 128 RD (its the older shorter kind, i think its rd))

Run Memtest which can be had for free at
www.memtest86.com

That will give that RAM a thorough test. You will know for sure.
