I have a HP 9870,128 ram,1.4 ghz. pentium 4 with a cdrw and cd drive.
I tried to install the Samsung firmware update (sw208f_9.exe) even though there was no need to..:-(
After install my cdrw drive will not open and the little light below it just stays lit (not normall). If I open it with a paper clip and put a cd in there it will not work.
The regular cd door will open but it will not work.
I went to My Computer Icon opened it and noticed there are no longer a M or a N drive.
I called HP customer service and after an hour or so of trying various problem solvers they decided they want me to send my computer to them UPS so they can fix it.
I really don't want to send it out for service but I may have to.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried using System Restore to roll back to a time where everything worked right? This is one of those instances where the System Restore feature really comes in handy.

You could try Add New Hardware in the Control Panel to see if Windows can detect the drives there. If that update wiped out some needed system files or corrupted your registry badly you might have to reinstall Windows. Did HP suggest that? A fresh install should restore the computer to the condition it was in when you first got it , so if the cd drives don't work them it will be time to ship it back to HP for repairs. I know it sucks to reformat and lose all your data, but it's something that almost every computer owner has had to suffer through at some time.

your firmware update attempt? how far did you get? did you flash it and get a corrupted error or something? the firmware tells the cd what it is. If you botched the update it might be confused and thinks its a usb card :)

I can't reinstall windows if the cd-rom won't work.
Niether the cd-rom nor the cdrw will work.
If they did I would have re initialized.Remember my computer no longer thinks it has a N or M drive.
HELP

Are they showing up when you go into BIOS, or are they showing up during the boot (the Black screen) when you first start up? If they are then maybe a boot disk will work and you can restore from your CD. You can make a boot disk without the cd-rom. Let us know what happens. Good luck.

In Device Manager, do you have any exclamation points on hard disk controllers ?
If you don't have listings in My Computer for cdroms, then also you probably don't have then in Device Manager.
This might be worth a try
Run REGEDIT
Go down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS
and see if there is an entry called NOIDE on right hand screen
Delete NOIDE if you find it there
Good luck...Krystyna
