I don't know how to get the bios up on this compact I owned older compacts but this was quite awhile ago and don't rember how I got into the bios ...this is problem #2 problem #3 is this thing came with a docking station and this is where I have installed the CD rom drive ...as I looked over this docking station it looks to me like it may have a built in scuzi board ...but I'll wait for comments on this as I'm just guessing ..but here's some more information I'm passing along..This is the best way to explain something that I've never seen before as this is my first laptop...of course Compact is not one of my favourite computers ...but the price was right ...what else can I say ... I really appreciate your time and interest on this matter Chichille..........

No, don't flash bios. It's a very hazardous job to do, an u may loose all.
I think that first u must check if the docking station is seen when u put ur laptop on it, and test by reading a booting floppy. This floppy should give u a way to fin ur cd.
Else, can u access bios setup on ur laptop? is there a change when u access it on ur station and out of it?

I was able to read all of the bios Chichille.,although it read something about not enough disk space I've got over a gig whitch is also on there and then it went on about making extra space.,I've no idea how to do this.,and also it states the docking station is indeed conected and so is the mouse and externel keyboard.,so If only I could get that darn CD rom connected I'd be off to the races technicly speaking>>.and it also states it has a scsi controler whitch I've disabled and maybe I should'nt have .,>>>>But that's all for now keep in touch.,Thanks a lot>> P/S I really appreciate all this help you've given me >>>>>>

in bios setup, is the chapter like "hardware" detect on "auto"? U can restore bios setup to default settings. Is ur boot sequence like a/d/c . The scci may be unable, cuz it could be ur hdd on it (?). Did u boot with ur win98 floppy? normally it should've gave u an access to ur cd.Does ur cd run when insert a cd?
Make all those checking with ur pc on ur station

Yep Chichille.,when I insert a cd it spins ok
just not reading in that mode I've just read the one and only answer on the new post and it refers to disable the boot drive A to boot from cd rom.,only one problem I'm not able to set it to auto .,the bios on these Compaqs are on the hard drive of course after you put it there with those setup disks and I think there are only two there are more available but I don't know what they are for., what a screwup eh.,yes they don't have a chip like normal computers no wonder no one cares for them.,but once you get them working their alright I guess cause I had a few of the real old ones and although I never worked on them I had a tech man that I knew repair and program them for a coffee or two .,but then he moved away.,but he knew these things inside and out.,this is where the problem is I don't know too much about them only the normal computers with the chip bios that I'm more familar with .,Okay I'll try all these different ways and I'll get back to ya when I have some luck with this., I'm probley just kiddig myself.,Oh'well thanks Chichille for sticking with me on this I'm going to have different opinions sooner or later on this old post as it's getting up to quite a few replies over one old cd rom drive I appreciate the advice>>>>>>>>>>>>>Al

i've had a problem on a compaq laptop few monts ago. If ur lost in ur modifications, the only way to get out is to set bios to default settings and restart. access to bios setup, Then u find the boot sequence (the way to access it is displaied in the bios, or at start don't remember) and put it to floppy/cdrom/hdd. then insert ur boot disk w98, choose with cdrom enabling, and insert ur cd.Don't use anymore now floppies u've downloaded. By the way, we all will make u out of this !

You know Chichille I think this may be the answer.,I know I should start out with a clean HDD .,what I mean by this is fdisk and at the sametime delete the primery[excuse my spelling]make fat 32 and then format and then use the 1.st setup disk., and do I need to insert the 2.nd disk or is this just for calling up the settings and checking them .,this I don't know as I've never used them before., and how do I check to see if the bios is installed on it.,cause it said something about making room about 2mgs for the diagnsotic files ., how do I do this I hav'nt a clue.,If you don't do the process right with these Compaq's they'll never work proper.,if your a Compaq owner then your the one person that can help me get this fired up and running again., cause these are not your everyday computers if you know what I mean>>>>>>>please keep up with these little tips that your giving me., and I'll probley get it working., Thanks again for your interest>>>>>>>>>>

The best way is, after fdisk :
without floppy, start, access to bios, and put it to defaults settings. Register and quit.
stop
insert floppy (the win 98 one)then start and u'll boot on it.
Then follow instructions to choose option "take the cdrom in charge" and then insert w98 cd then install windows.
remember : one of the floppy u've downloaded on compaq site is a diagnostic one. No need to use it for that problem.
Also, the Bios is in a spare memory on motherboard, not on HDD.After setting it to default, and put ur win98 floppy boot, u normally should be able to install w98.

Ur on the way.
To access Bios and restore defaults settings, press either F1 or F10 (depends on the model)while start. if it doesn't work, use ur downloaded floppy to access bios.
After that, use the win98 floppy to reboot on and then u should be able to reinstall with the cd.

first, download a win98 bootdisk (from ms site or make a research). Normally the cd driver is on it.If u don't have it, give ur email on this site, i send u mine (it's a microsoft original).
Then visit this site.
www.laptopbits.co.uk/Techn
ical/support3.htm
Normally, after a hdd format, u only have to insert the win98 bootdisk and the win98 cd.

If nothing worked:
1st run both floppys u've downloaded on compaq site. They should give you advice to reset ur bios and/or access to it.In fact
To reinstall ur OS u'll have next to change ur boot sequence, as discribed in the sheet at www.laptopbits.co.uk/Techn
ical/support3.htm to put it to floppy/cd/hdd
If u don't do all that, i think u miss a step, and u'll get sticked.
After all that, ur pc should be restore to is initial state, waiting for an OS.
Then u can use ur win98 boot floppy and reinstall W98 with ur cd.
Its imperative u read the laptopbits site to understand wot i say.
keep in touch.

You know what happened .,I had a big problem getting this one I'm using to boot up., this is why my reply is a little late.,I've been downloading so much stuff for that Compaq I must have loaded something in the dos and really messed it up.....is this possible?.,Oh'well I've been asking questions on the wrong forum this is what I've been told it's a little hard to pick the right forum when your changing from Win 95 to Win 98 or even from win 3.1.,right now I'm supposed to be at the Win 9X forum It's a good thing I did'nt go to XP forum..LOL
But anyhow forget about that I'm here and I'm staying.,I got that bios or setup to go on the harddrive so now all I have to do is figure out what IRQ or scsi address to use for that cd rom or will it pickup it by it's self????But as you know this cd rom unit is in that dumb docking station but this is showing up as enabled so things are looking good I think just a few more post answers and I should have it....Thanks Chichille for all your help through this mess from the start of this post>>>>>>>>#27 now

Yes.
U can dowload it at compaq site, in taping Elite 4/75 cx to make a search, u'll obtain the download u need (i've cheked it) to ur station. After that, u'll maybe have to access bios and modify either line called boot sequence and put it to floppy/cdrom/hdd,
or 3 lines:
first boot device : a
second : cdrom
third : hdd
In fact on ur type of laptop, bios is really on the HDD, in a special partition. Both floppies u've dowloaded before u've 1 to reset ur PC and a second to check all.
Let see wot's happening after making that.
Keep n touch.

compaq.com/support/files/LTE/fr/download/8290.html
download the .exe file to restore ur lost partition. After that u should be able to read the " setup floppy" u've downloaded from compaq and have a result.
at this site if u make a research on 4/75 cx, u'll have all to setup ur laptop, drivers included.
all can be attempted now...

Problem with BIOS COMPAQ LTE 4/75C (SETUP access)

This is part of an help i've found, about installing linux, but u can explain ur difficulties :
The one which wrote said "I had to solve a problem with the SETUP which is on the hard disk (!) located in /dev/hda3. Tips : when you install Linux on this laptop, don't delete the /dev/hda3 partition ! Delete the hda1, then create a hda1, 2, 4, for /, /home/ or /usr, but keep the /hda3 (to avoid to have to search in the Compaq website for the SETUP files and reinstall it :-( " that to say hdd on ur laptop must have a special partition for setup, and an other to ur OS, no matter what u choose.
I think u should fdisk to see how many partitions u see, and how much Mo u see. If the partition called dev/hda3 doesn't exist,
make it, activate it and copy floppy setup in it.
try this.

i say u must fdisk and then see if u've 2 partitions on HDD :
one called /dev/hda3 contains bios and setup
a second one which contains ur OS (windows).
If not, make a partition, that u call /dev/hda3.The name u give seems to be imperative. On it u copy ur floppy about bios and setup u've downloaded on compaq site.U make it activ. u boot on it to see what happens.
The way to create a partition is explained when ur in fdisk. If not, u can easily have the advice on the net.
HAVING 2 PARTITIONS (one with Bios called /dev/hda3 , and a second for ur OS)IS THE BASICAL "OUT OF FACTORY" CONFIGURATION.
Seems u can perform with another way of doing.

With only a 1gig HDD it's worth playing around with partitions.. When I need the bios I just have to put the floppy in the drive and there it is ., and leave the large HDD support., what do you think Chichille and I'm going ahead with installing that cd rom in the docking station I'm almost there just not installing the driver proper cause I don't understand the dos system., I've read up on it but their leavin' some inportant steps out .,my trouble is tryin' to read between the lines if you know what I mean .,but I'm a lot closer than I was a few days ago .,thanks to your help and other things I was able to pick off some of the other posts.,seems there are a lot of other people having problems installin' their cd rom driver it seems like an everyday thing I guess .not quite as many responses like this one .,We almost have a book here ready for publishing ha ha ha ...Okay I'm still workin' on this thing just keep in touch .,as I want you to be the first one to know when everythings ready for the big moment the install of Windows ..Thanks Chichille..........Al

normally if u boot on ur win98 floppy, there's a driver on it for ur cd. Try to insert ur win98 floppy and start ur laptop on it. This floppy usually autoruns to prompt u an invite to install.
Please try it and report.

Is it bios u access with floppy, not dos?
to copy bios from ur floppy to hdd, dos command is :
cd a:
copy *.* c:/
u should be able to access bios without floppy next time. Try and report.

I just got fed up with this thing..... Chichille and took it to a place where they got all kinds of surplus parts.,I never seen so much old stuff .,old but new if you know what I mean.,and the fellow that was there .,really knew my Compaq it took him about fifteen minutes to get win 95 on it and he charged me $20 ..Okay here's how he done it .,first he said 486's don't recongnize HDD over 512mgs .,That part I can't believe to be true .,cause I had a 1.2gig installed in a old Compaq desk pro a few years ago and it recongnized it no problem.,so he he put the partition back on got my bios back with that 2to3 mgs allowence it calls for the bios must be on the HDD not on a floppy boot up disk but here's the tricky part how he got mine up and runnin'He had a kit [brand new] not used that includes a ribbon with a power connector on it hooked inside an old Pentium ll took out my small HDD and hooked it to this ribbon [I bought one for myself $14 plus tax] and downloaded just the bat files off my win 95 cd rom nothing more than these.,he plays by the book of rules he would'nt put the whole thing on even though I have a ledgit disk not a copy., this is what he told me.,of course he don't know me .,so I can go along with this .,and put back my Hdd and told me to use only the Win 98 startup disk .,wrote down the commands on a piece of paper starting from floppy A: then C: [ simple procedure].,and that's about., I done this when I got home and bingo I installed Win 95 .,no problem
at all .,fifteen to twenty minutes to all this time me and you typed these post respones back and forth a happy ending for everyone .,But I want to keep in touch with you .,as you put forth your best effort and if it was'nt for my lack of knowledge I may have got it going with your instructions also .,so I'll let you go .,When I get my email working again .,I'll email you .,can't do this right now ., till this is fixed .,Thanks you were a great help .,I just could'nt take anymore sleepless nights from working on that Laptop and I'll be in touch with you for sure.,till then you have a good day Chichelle.,and in the meantime I'll be working on getting that email back up and workin'......Al

okay.
I think he's restored ur bios in the missing partition, and then put what u can usually find on a win95 booting floppy on ur hdd.
The most important : it works !
When u'll be able to surf on the net, have a visit on sites u can learn some dos commands. U don't need to learn all, but some are very important to get out of any problem, with little advice when needed.
Go on visit computing.net,as i do, u'll learn many things about pc !
have a nice day. Here in France sun is shining and we'll have a very nice week end under the sun.

Alright... Chichille I listed my email on this response but if you want to check out the posts with [Big Al] on them they have my personal email address on them just click on the name I had to change from just being plain [Al] as there a lot of Al's out there., even I get confusesd sometimes when I'm reading it and find out it's someone else's post.,Oh'well what can I tell ya .,anyway we now have two ways of communicating back and forth .,but only on this one as a help channel this is not a chat line as someones going to tell us no doubt., So take care and keep in touch.,and have a good weekend in the sun under the blue skies in good old France.....Big Al
