THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO A VERY OLD MESSAGE WHICH HELPED ME A LOT...
You can find Steves posts here:

--------I had the same problem as Steve. I wasn’t able to see the pictures on thumbnails in my picture folder. The only type I could see was BMP files.
Then, following Steve’s tips I could solve my problem. Yes, I had to execute REGEDIT and add new folders to JPG, GIF and TIF HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT FOLDERS.
The procedure: (WINDOWS ME)
1. I opened REGEDIT.exe
2. 0pened folder HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
3. Opened folder JPG
4. Added new folder and gave it the name "ShellEx"
5. Inside "ShellEx" opened another new folder called "{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}" and gave it the value: "{3F30C968-480A-4C6C-862D-EFC0897BB84B}"
6. Did the same procedure to GIF, TIF and any picture file I wanted to see thumbnail.OBS: I had my BMP files seen as thumbnail, so I figured out, after reading Steve’s tips, that I had to have the same folders (ShellEx...) and values in the other pictures files register. It worked just fine!!!
THANX STEVE!!!

No need to do it manually.
You can download the reghack from a couple of different places on the net, for every flavor of Windows OS.
