What sort of mouse do you have?, do you have the latest drivers?. I have heard of problems with the MS Intellimouse Explorer.

Get mouse drivers from microsoft, They have all the different drivers in one download and you can select your type of mouse, then it will install it.

It's probably software, you should try it in DOS or something after loading a mouse driver...
It could always be something stupid like a dirty or sticky mouse, or a switch or something partially flipped....I had an old mouse that had a switch on the bottom, changing it from Microsoft to PC mouse or something like that, but it caused all sorts of problems once when the switch was partially flipped. Probably not the problem but if nothing else works you might want to look....

Is it just your mouse freezing or the whole computer??? Try going to safemode and see if it still happens, do this by restarting and after it restarts start tapping F5 and that should take you to safemode. If it acts up in there its probably something hardware related. While you're in safemode, right click on MY COMPUTER and go to Properties, and then the Device Manager and check the mouse (like the 1st post said) look for the yellow !-looking things and also just highlight anything listed under the mouse (click on the + symbol) and remove it (or them, sometimes there's multiples) and then reboot and try it. You should take out your ball of the mouse and wash it and check the rollers for stuff on them and clean w/ your fingernails or a q-tip w/ maybe some alcohol. If that doesn't work then either your mouse is bad or possibly the ram also. I suppose it could be a bad port on the motherboard, but that's very unlikely.
Good luck, let me know what happens. Email me if needed. There's not a whole lot that can go wrong w/ a mouse!! Should be fairly simple to detect if it is in fact just the mouse acting up and not the whole computer freezing.

Is it a USB mouse. If it is, is it pluged into a USB hub with other devices and is it a self powered or bus powered hub? If you have to many USB devices and not enough power on the USB chain this will happen. Whats happening is the USB controller is reseting.
