I have recently found out that my new hard drive wihtout overclocking is overheating. I dont know why and Im good at computers. just not internally. Could you guys email me any info on how to fix this? I currently have a fujitsu 40gig 5400 rpm drive, brand new and its overheating to the point of freezing the computer. Is it a problem with to much voltage or what? I need help fast.

By what means did you determine that the Hard Drive was over heating?

return the harddrive and get a new one... 5400 rpm HD should not overheat or need any cooling fans

The black chip underneth and on it was extremely hot. I noticed this when my comptuer froze 5 times in a row and well i felt the drive and it was hotter then anyone ive felt. The chip on it gets so hot without this fan (a window fan) blowing on it, it would freeze my comp from going so hot. My room is not hot and the case is off and im sure in under 5 mins it will overheat.

Is their anyway it could be overheating? Cause I jsut got the drive replace dtoday. its brand new and its still getting real hot like my video card (voodoo3 2000 16meg)
I diont think ive ever had a problem with my drives but even when i put in my maxtor 8 gig for a bit... it started to get hot to. I dont think its the drive, i think its my comp or something. Im also sure igot like a 300v power supply. 50 more then normal

Can't say I ever seen a new one overheat - but, it's possible. Mine runs about 38 degrees C - Visit the manufacturers web site and look at the operating specs.

Miro's got a point - back it up...

riley, all harddrives get hot. i dont think
thats your problem. i think the cause of the
lockups and freezing is the cpu overheating.
you did'nt tell us any thing about the computer apart from what sort of hdd it has.
try replacing the cpu fan with a better one
and see what happens. check and see if the old cpu fan is still working.

Im running a p3 667 and it barely gets hot. The hard drive spec page i think says it should run at about a ambiet temp of 45 degrees C. It says the outside should never exceed 55. Would 45 or so be hot enough to touch but not be able to keep your finger on comfortablly? I know the lockups and such are not from anything else. My cpu is fine, power is fine and most everyting is, this is a new comp i made a year or so, in a month, ago. I also blow my junk out regularly so its not clogged wiht dust or anything. Is it normal for a 40gig 5400 rpm drive to get hot? im letting it run without the fan now and this one black chip is always hot...

i have 3 40 gig seagate 5400 rpm harddrives, one of them is built into an external enclosure so easy to check the temperature on it... the enclosure has a fan, i shut ot the fan and i did let the hard drive to read 2 gig of data (well over one hour of work on the external)...i could not notice any difference from the ambient temperature on the cirquit board by touching it...my guess would be that it is less than 40 deg celsius

and I checked teh drive temp, hot, vide card, real hot.

But my video has a heat sink, nothing around it and well it was burning hot. (16meg voodoo3 2000 card pci) drive was just hot like normal.

Riley,
Does it freeze immediately after booting up or after a period of time or heavy use?

I've got to agree with Miro, backup your data and take back the drive. If this drive requires additional cooling to function properly they should include it in the system, like a graphics card or at very least note it in the installation instructions. It sounds like it's not working right.
