Hi, I cant recall when this problem started to occur..but whenever I try to shut down or restart my computer...you know how when you go to start, shut down/restart, the screen will fog up...then the computer will shut down/restart...but my screen fogs up...then....goes back to the desktop...this happens whenever I try to shut down or restart the computer...the computer still works fine after it goes back to the desktop..but its just annoying that I can't shutdown or restart my computer (the regular way) have tried to start up my computer with selective start up, and I unchecked everything under it...but when I start up my computer, the box next to "load startup group items" is checked with a grey check mark..I tried to take it off, but whenever I start my comptuer, it checks again...and when I go to the "start up" tab in the system configuration utility..this one is always checked... Name is "Windows" loaded from "registry (machine run)" and the command is "C:\msdos98.exe" I looked at my friend's computers, none of them have that command......so I suspect that might be my problem of not being able to shutdown or restart my computer....another thing is...in the start up tab..I have TONS of "run=" checked..and they're all loaded from "win.ini" whats wrong with that? and I have a couple of "load powerprofile" in the start up tab also...don't I just need 1? I'm getting really frustrated with this reg stuff...please help me out, thanks!

Here are three possible reasons on why:
1) Incompatible, damaged, or conflicting device drivers.
2) A damaged exit sound file.
3) Incorrectly configured or damaged hardware.

At the office we have a standalone PC(not networked) that always returns to windows. whether you try to restart/shutdown/ im at home now and cant verify what it is but i seem to remember it had something to do with the power management settings. Again i cant be sure if thats what it was or if your problem is the same as the PC at the office but your post caught my attention. Hope this helps!

You have a Trojan virus called PWSteal.Trojan or Mine.
You are most likely not able to shut down because of this problem... that is also why you have "tons" of run= lines. The trojan is adding stuff to your win.ini file.
For more information see:

http://antivirus.cai.com/You are supposed to have two LoadPowerProfiles. They are loaded from two differnet places in the registry and perform differnet functions.

It just sets there telling me win is shuting down but won't.also the filedfs.vxd in sys.ini is missinf from my files. How can I fet it back

My computer will not shut down or restart,it go'es as far as showing win.is shuting down and stops. Also the file dsf.vxd is missing from my sys.ini, how can I get it back.
thank you.

This same problem started with me right after I installed PeoplePC ISP software. A work around, so you don't have to just power down, is to CTRL+DEL twice to restart and then choose shutdown as normally done. This only happens for me if I go online before I try to shutdown/restart. If I don't go online, it all works fine. I don't want to uninstall the PeoplePC ISP software because they are the best ISP I have found. Any suggestions on getting my Windows ME infected / afflicted computer back to sanity.
