I have a Compaq Presario with Windows ME, and for a while now I've had so many programs come up on start-up, that I get a message saying not enough memory to run whenever I try to start a program, so I have to end task everything that's running. It also freezes up on me, where I can't use the mouse or keyboard and have to shut it off and turn it back on. So I tried to delete some stuff so I wouldn't have that problem, and I must have deleted something I wasn't supposed to, because when I was doing that, my computer froze, when I turned it back on, the System 32 folder was opened, it froze again when I tried closing it, then when I turned it back on, I got a blank screen, it wouldn't boot up to Windows, or a cursor, or anything, but the light's on, both the computer and the monitor. The only time something is on the screen is when I unplug the monitor, it says to check my connection, but I can't use the keyboard or mouse, nothing works. I'm using a friend's computer, until I figure out how to fix it, please help.
THank you

If you want to save the data on it, your best shot is to reinstall the operating system over the top of itself. Get the WinME CDROM or the Compaq System Restore CDROM, insert it and restart the computer. The computer should boot off the CDROM and start giving you options. Make sure you choose "restore WITHOUT erasing data" if you use the restore disk (if that option exists that is, restore disks can vary). If you're using a WinME CDROM, just install it normally.
There's other fancy ways you may be able to salvage the situation, but try this first.

I actually tried that, and nothing came up on the screen, the light went on for the drive for a second, but it didn't load up on the screen.

Try going into the computer's BIOS and making sure it is set to boot off the CDROM first. You'll see 'boot sequence' or something similar in there.
You can enter the BIOS by tapping a key as soon as you turn the computer on, usually you'll see something like "F2 to enter setup" or "DEL to enter detup". On most PC's it's the delete key, but on alot of compaq's it can be one of the F keys. Check your documentation of just experiment until you find the right key.
