Comment: My computer has been sick lately. We think that there was a power surge and it messed some things up. We also believe it's fixable, but only if we restore the factory settings of EVERYTHING, losing all that we cannot fit onto a zip disk. Let me describe my dilemma... Sound Card is not recognized Will not set to any other resolution than 640x480 Will not set to any other color scheme but 16 color (not 16 bit...16 COLORS, that's IT!) I have rebooted and tried and tried and tried to reinstall directx which is my soundcard driver on Windows 98. I dont know what to do and I want to see if there are any alternatives to having to reset everything, but in a worst case scenario that's not that bad. Well I need alot of luck and alot of advice...

Reply: (edit)Sounds more like an OS problem than a physical problem with the hardware - check to see in the BIOS and at bootup (on the black DOS screens)if the items like the sound and video card are setup or listed there. There's no chance it's only booting to safe mode is there? Look at reinstalling drivers by removing items in device manager (see response 2) if they are there and re-installing them then letting windows see if it can rebuild the driver information database - which might well have become corrupted. Wawadave (as usual) gives the best advice here - try a system restore first from a date when you know everything WAS working ok. Let us know how you get on...

Reply: (edit)System restore takes quite a while, perhaps over 40 mins. It may depend on how much stuff is on your HD. Don't do what I did and abort it after 10 mins cos' I thought it had stopped running. The blue line showing progress moves a bit then stops for ages before moving again, and aborting the operation brings problems of it's own. This killed Norton and other things got messed up. Leave restore to take as much time as it wants.
