Subject: My CD DRIVE won't read games I have
Comment:

I am currently using Windows ME. I recently got my computer, so all the drivers and such are updated. There is something wrong with my computer, because when I put in a game in the cd rom drive, it autoruns, but right after I click "Play" it shuts down by itself. This has also happenned to my friend's computer, who also has windows ME and got their computer last year. I have played these games before, but recently, they have failed on me. Is there some reasn behind this?
Thanks

Does it happen with just one game or all games?

A few thoughts. See if you installed a previous version of Direct X ontop of a newer version you already had. Newest version out there is 8.1 I believe.

Also make sure that all of your drivers for video / sound / cdrom are current.

Do you remember installing anything just before you had the problems?

I'm not sure if I installed a previous version of direct x. I doubt it though, but if I did, how can I fix it?
I'm quite sure all my drivers for video, sound and cdrom are current.
I'm pretty sure I didn't install anything before the problems. Because, the week before I had the problems, I was on vacation. So the problems started right after I came back.

Some video cards aren't capable of processing the gigantic maps in newer games like Max Pain or GTA3 so they just shut the program down. If you can't play older games though, it's definitely a driver issue.

If it's a driver/video issue, how could I have played it before? It was just a week ago that I could play..and now it doesn't work.

Will your CD-ROM only not read games or all programs and videos?

Also, I you have installed program that shares the same drivers as your video card or other devices, but had install an older version of the driver.

I have 2 computers that have CDroms which do not read OS programs like WindowsMe Windows98 etc, but can read other CD materials fine. This is from a vrius. These are SCSI drives. I did not even find time to fix it, I just use the IDE roms to read them.

If your case is not a virus one, then, sometimes when you installed a new programs, it would go to change the existing DLL files without askinhg you, or even update a driver by itself. especially Games like to do these foolish things. I have a photo processing program that wants to install IE3 while the current IE version is up to 6. That is the reason why you cannot let the program install by itself. You always should choose "Custom" installation whenever possible, and you select not to install the older versions of these accessorial programs. Older versions on top of new versions will almost always screw things up. Example again, depending on your OS, if you installed IE 5 on top of IE 6, then you will never seem to be able to get back the new version anymore, it just would not reinstall easily. Same with Outlook Express, because you cannot even first remove the older version. Microsoft made sure that, as long as that you are using their IE, you will not remove their email program no matter what version. I have another program which wants to install Acrobat Reader3 as automatic accessorial installtion, if you go to install that main program. But this will remove the newer 5 version that I currently am using, even though it causes no problem, just reinstall the newer version.
Have a nice day,
Harry Highlife.

I would suggest that you go to reinstall the video driver, reinstall all the games. Look through amongst all the games programs, install just the newest veresion you can find of these DirectX's. Doing all of that, don't forget to firstly remove the existing games programs and ever the video driver, first. By the way,WindowsMe wiill most likely reinstall the video driver for you if you restart computer.

Hope you can get the kinks away.
Harry Highlife.

Could't help noticing you said you only had the pc a few days and it was workin fine then - I know it's not as involved as the very likely solutions above (esp driver and DirectX issues) but did you try a system restore back to the last time you know it worked well?
Got to be worth a try...

Mark

Its amazing the different problems people have.......many of the problems I see I have never experienced. I guess it proves the old adage any thing is possible with computers.

I agree with the post delete your cdrom drive from your device manager and let it reinstall. If it is just game cd's you cant access it almost has to be a video or direct x problem. Some games will install a previous version of direct x. You can always install direct x 8.1b again to overwrite any problems that might of been created by one of the games.
