i need help! i was trying to upgrade my comp with a windows xp upgrade disk, but then in the installation it showed that some of the files on the disk were currupted! so i cancelled the installation and restarted me comp, now my computer gives off this weird smell, like somethiing is burning or something and my cd drive won't even open anymore! this has never happened before, plz help me guys!
If the drive won't open when the computer is starting and still in the POST/ bios stage, some program "to open it" won't do any good, and anytime you smell bad things, it's a bad sign.
Most drives have a small hole for a paper clip.......
With the power OFF repeat POWER OFF GENTLY insert the paper clip until the drive tray starts to move open.

As everyone else have seen it's a very SMALL hole SOMEWHERE underneath the CD tray. I have a CD-ROM and a CD-RW drive, and they BOTH have a very TINY hole below the tray. Here is a pic to illustrate what we all mean. http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/iwow/CES_Log/Photo_Log/CES_Log01/Broken_CD_Drive02.jpg
Look exactly to the immedite left of the eject button there is a little hole next to it. It's between the eject button and the COMPACT DISK logo thing. Stick a paperclip (bend it straight) and stick it in the hole gently and the drive should open up and you can remove the disk.
my bad my bad, thanks guys! i got it, but my cd drive is loose and everything and i can take out the cd that was in the tray, but my cd drive still won't open and close when i press the eject button :S plz help!
Do you know Josh C. or Dragon?Oh Well,CD-Roms can be picked up dirt cheap nowadays>I would just replace it.That would be your easiest and most economical endeavor.Best 0f Luck!!
Hi, I'm Having a very similar problem. The only differance is I haven't done anything bad like the original poster so there isn;t a disk trapped and there is no funny smell. Still, The Drive wont ioen. When I press eject it just whirs like its opening, but nothing happens and after a moment it clicks and stops whiring. I tried the paper clip thing, but to no avail. Please help me if you can.
