Comment:

I have had Windows Media Player 9 for some time now and just recently I keep getting the error when I try to play any music CD's in my CD-ROM drive. I can play directly from the media player just fine. My CD drive reads data just fine. There is no problem with getting sounds from my speakers. Everything else is working great. The properties in this program says the last time it was modified was April 09,2004 and I haven't done any updates since. Last night I checked for updates and it said that I had them all.

When I load a music CD I get the error: Windows Media Player encountered an error when reading the CD-ROM drive in digital mode. Then says to click OK to switch to analg mode. When I do try to switch it tell me the same thing again with the option to close or more information. Then when I click on more information it says:

0xC00D11F8: Cannot play the CD using digital playback
Windows Media Player could not play the CD using digital playback. The Player has automatically switched the CD-ROM drive to analog playback. To switch back to digital CD playback, use the Devices tab.

To switch to digital CD playback

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Devices tab.
Double-click the CD-ROM drive, and then in the Playback area, click Digital.
Error ID = 0xC00D11F8, Condition ID = 0x00000000

I have done a lot of online searching and I can't find the solution to this problem.

I can't use my Creative Play center either because it says I also have the digital error there too. It also says CT play 2 caused an error in CTACD.PJB. It will close now. Then when I click on OK, I get another error box that says error in CTMP3102.dll. The properties in this program says the last time it was modified was April 25,2004. I have used this program after that date and never encountered any problem till now. I haven't done any updates since then.

I have done a search and the only thing I could find, and it didn't work, was that I was to go into the tools/device manager and sound properties. But the properties won't open. I even messed around in the Control panal under sounds.

I have Altec Lansing 5.1 surround speakers and they have great sound. I did change it to read the 5.1 digital in the control panel, but didn't make any difference. I really don't know much about the speakers, I'm still learning this computer stuff.

I hadn't played any music CD's for a few weeks, so I'm not realy sure when it quit playing my music CD's.

During the last few weeks I had uninstalled Norton's SystemWorks 2001 and installed the Norton's SystemWorks 2003. Everything went fine but was having some random startup error problems for a while. Like Loadqm not loading, and a couple of other items here and there. I would just shut down and restart the computer and everything is fine then.

Then about a week later I added a HP 4070 scanner. I had a problem with a open HP folder for the scanner loading on startup. I went to System Configuration Utility and disabled it from loading. Later I disabled some other HP items from loading too. Like some of the HP CD writer items, but I only use it for writing to CD'R's, not to play music.

I had ran my Norton's antivirus after that and it picked up
Feature:Script Blocking
Virus Name: suspious script
Action Taken: Access Allowed. Source: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\hps3323\ins1.js
I figured that Norton just didn't like the newly installed scanner, so I allowed it. I hope this was the correct thing to do.

I don't think that should have anything to do with my Creative CD Player or Windows Media Player.

On my Creative play center I unchecked from the startup is the Creative SB Live launcher, Audio HQ SB Live, Creative News Update.

Microsoft also had an update of two security updates just a little while after that. Then another security update last night. I don't know if any of these things I mentioned here has anything to do with my media players not playing.

Just for more information, I have updated and ran Ad-aware, Spybot S&D. I have Spywreblaster, CW-Shredder and I run ZoneAlarm Pro. And of course as I mentioned a ways back, Norotn's SystemWorks 2003.

Please help. Thanks

You probably would be well served by doing a system restore back to an earlier date before you had all these problems, corrupted files.

Tammy1949,

Here's a crazy idea/suggestion. Who knows, might prove productive. Then again, it's just a crazy idea :-)

Disable your auto insert notification/auto run feature, for your CD-ROM. {right-click My Computer, click Properties, click Device Manager (Tab), double click the CDROM, double click the name of your CD-ROM, click the Settings (Tab), uncheck what was said earlier, and OK, to close all.} Restart the computer, and give it a try. If that helps, I guess that's one way around it. If it doesn't, you can simply reverse the changes made, with no damages done.

CrazyOne,

I did what you ask then it said I had to restart my computer, so I did. Before this when I put the CD into my drive, it would show the names but not play. After I unchecked the auto run feature nothing showed up at all. So I put it back the way it was. When I was in there I could see a checked box there for digital play option, but it is grayed out and I can't access it.

I took a look at my book and I saw that it has a place for a digital wire. I also saw a place for two other speaker wires (right & left), which is for mono, I think. I do know that I have digital speakers. I have speakers 4 on top of my desk and a woofer on the floor. I don't have any wires for the mono, (right & left). I think the only way I am able to get mono is to get some cheep speakers, the kind that has two wires (right & left), which I don't want or need!!!

Like I said my sound is really great and I have no problems except I can't play my CD's. I really think Microsoft has really done something to make this happen.

I was wondering if maybe I were to get different media player, if this were to solve my problem. I don't need all of the fancy things that Windows Media Player offers. I just want to play my CD's and record them on my computer. I'm not even interested in downloading music from the internet. I just want a simple capatible media player.

No, I really do not want to do a system restore. I've been having troubles since a long time back when I had a virus and it disabled Nprotect. I had uninstalled my old Norton 2001 and put Norton's SystemWorks 2003 and this took care of that Nprotect problem. It took me a week to do all of that. All of the reading and deleting Norton's files in the registry. Since the new install I get a few startup errors about every 3 or 4 times of starting up. Usually TaskMoniter, LoadQM, and once, today, I got Nprotect loading error. But things are good at this time. I really don't want to have to put Norton's back on again. Or would I have to if I did a system restore? I don't really know much about doing a restore.

Has done this for about 3 to 4 times in a row just lately. I don't know if this means anything but, I should also point out that I uninstalled a scanner yesterday and put a different one on. This morning my registry had to do a repair. Everything was fine last night. So I don't know what happened. Would this interferre with a system restore?

Oh, I also just remembered that lately when I place a site into my favorites list the internet will freeze. Is this a connection to my media player problem?

I have ran all updated, Ad-aware, spybot, Norton's antivirus, CW Shredder, and hijackthis and they came out clean. I also have SpywareBlaster and updated too.

Tammy1949,

"Before this when I put the CD into my drive, it would show the names but not play."

Ok, and is this when you got the error messages, just after/during?

"After I unchecked the auto run feature nothing showed up at all."

Back to, was the error message gone. You wrote; "I can play directly from the media player just fine."<<original question<< So, if the error message was gone, you still could access the files/music, from media player or creative player, yes-no. With no error message.

Tammy, about the wires, you can hook it up annalog, or digital, and even both, if the device supports both. I'm talking internal connections. If you have more than one device, that will play sound files, **e.g. CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD, DVD-RW, ect. ect.** you would have to determine, which one, you would like to have a digital input, to your soundcard.

Now, if you have a cd-rom, and a cd-rw. One will be hooked/connected to the sound card digital, and the other analog. Well, they might be both analog, but the person who assembled, should of at least put one digital. If the setting, is grayed out, and you still have sound. Then it's possible, that it's connected analog, not digital.

Tammy, have three different computer here right now, at this time. All running WinME, WMP9, with creative sound blaster audigy platinums (<<soundcard<<). They have different brands/types of writers (plextor, sony, ect.), and have no instance, of said error message. Even playing/recording/imaging/{legally}/ect., protected media.

"I have Altec Lansing 5.1 surround speakers and they have great sound" digital, analog?

How are your speakers hooked/connected, to the sound card? One wire, or more? {answer, possibly is more}

I'm a little foggy minded right now. Went to a game last night, and didn't get home until this afternoon. It was a great game *go blackhawks*. The stuff after the game, and in the morning, were, shall we say exquisite. In all aspects ;-) I wasn't fogy, by any means, last night, or this morning. Well, enough of the soap :-) I'll check back later,

Question:
"Before this when I put the CD into my drive, it would show the names but not play."

Ok, and is this when you got the error messages, just after/during?

Answer:
The error would come as soon as I would put the CD in and it opened up media player. Then if I was to click on the "playing now" tab it would show the song titles it will display an error also.

Question:
"After I unchecked the auto run feature nothing showed up at all."

Back to, was the error message gone. You wrote; "I can play directly from the media player just fine."<<original question<< So, if the error message was gone, you still could access the files/music, from media player or creative player, yes-no. With no error message.

Answer:
Yes the error message was gone because nothing would work. It was as if I never even put a CD in, I had to manually open the Media Player and it wouldn't detect any CD at all.

Question:
"I have Altec Lansing 5.1 surround speakers and they have great sound" digital, analog?

How are your speakers hooked/connected, to the sound card? One wire, or more? {answer, possibly is more}

Answer:
My speakers are hooked up correctly. I checked with the book. I have had these hooked up and have had the same sound card for over 2 years. They have always work just fine. They work fine now. I'm sure it's not my sound card or speakers. I just can't get my media player to play CD's. This has happened just recently.

I have to leave and run up to another town right now. I will be back latter tonight.

I was wondering what and where can I download a media player that will work on this computer of mine without all of the extra fancy add on's, that won't use the files from the media player that I already have. I'm afraid that it might interfere and cause the new download one to act the same as the 2 that I already have.Does anyone know?

I just want to be able to put my CD'd on my computer and burn them to CD-R's and also listen to them on my computer. I am not into video's and downloading music.

Or even just the cd driver part of media player, that seems to have dropped out. It should be possible, in theory, to install just the missing component, don't you think?

That might be better, but I don't know what the cd driver is called or where to look for it at.

Thanks

I have the same exact problem with Windows 98SE. I have tried every setting change that seemed obvious. I know the CD -ROM is okay because I can play music CD's with Start-Programs-Accessories-Entertainment-CD Player. But Windows media Player will not play the Music CD's.

If you have found the solution to your problem, please post it here.

Sorry, I didn't find a darn thing about the media player and never will now. My Windows ME died today and am now running Windows XP and I have a good media player now, 7.0. I just hope it doesn't get messed up.

So I guess this post is closed now, unless someone else is following it.

I'm not stupid, I'm just in a learning mode!

For those of you who are having this problem, I found the solution to my particular problem. I learned that Norton Ghost 2003 changes the ASPI file named WNaspi32.dll to a newer version. This causes Windows Media Player and other players - including DVD's - to not operate properly. The solution lies in replacing the ASPI files with the original versions. Once you do that, everything should work fine.

Having very similar problem with 98SE, media player 9. Cable, all other stuff is okay, can play cd's that have sound files fine, but when I put a music CD in, a window pops up telling me media player can't read digital and is switching to analog. No sound comes out of speakers (altec langsing 3-pc system).

I can plug headphones into CDROM and hear music fine, but won't play on speakers. Uninstalled 9.0 media player and went back to 98SE basic CDPLAYER, and same problem.

Haven't installed anything new the last month or so, and problem started about a week ago out of the clear blue. Tried restoring wnaspi32.dll, no luck...wait, come to think of it, just transferred my windows files from old drive to new according to microsoft's transfer instructions. Had to work out some bugs, but no real probs. This was about 10 days ago, so there may be something here. kiwigal experienced problems after a reinstall, and my transfer included a reinstall of 98SE from disc, then upgrading it from saved components in setup.

Will keep trying different things, and post if I find something.

Your problem is exactly what I encountered. I might recommend that you visit the following site to read up on ASPI problems. They have a free download which will allow you to get you ASPI files correctly matched for Windows media Player. The site is www.chickensys.com/translator/misc/aspiproblems.html

I had the same problem in Windows ME. I don't know what triggered it, but possibilities were installing Norton Ghost 2003 and upgrading Windows Media Player from V7 to V9.

The 'aspiproblems' page recommended by Mike Noyes suggests installing older versions of 5 files:
winaspi.dll - wnaspi32.dll - apix.vxd - aspienum.vxd - sparrow.mpd
My system had only the first 3 of these, so I replaced them by the older versions. This made no difference. I then added aspienum.vxd (which hadn't been on my system before), and it worked! I then reverted to the later versions of wnaspi32.dll and apix.vxd (winaspi.dll hadn't changed), and it still worked!! I then deleted aspienum.vxd, and it still worked!!!

In other words, these files are exactly the same as when I had the problem, but the problem has now gone away. I suppose running once with aspienum.vxd present fixed something else (e.g. something in the registry). I'm happy with the outcome, but I wish I understood what was going on.

I followed the instructions on the link recommended by Mike Noyes, and it worked! Now I'm a total techno-hopeless case so thank you to all of you who contributed ideas to help with this problem. I think it's been at least a year since this computer's been going properly, and I've paid good money to have it fixed (twice!) unsuccessfully. So now I think I'm pretty clever and my husband's really impressed. I'm not brave enough to start deleting aspienum.vxd though, Mike D- I think I'll leave well enough alone! Thanks again, guys!
