My new PC is unusable (sending this on the old one) due to piles of the same error message boxes as soon as me is loaded. The box is titled RUNDLL and the message is 'Error in reg32.dll - Missing entry UpdateButtonSupport'. The only escape is CTRL+ALT+Del and close down. It is impossible to open programs or do anything else, as the boxes appear at intervals of a second or so. This happened after installing HP scanner software which had run on my old system under Windows 95 (but the correct driver for ME has not yet been found).

It is essential to have the correct ME drivers for scanners and printers. This causes serious problems. Hp should have it on their site and they will usually post out a free CD if you phone them.
Can you System Restore to get back to where you were and wait for the new software?

Boot into safe mode.
To do this:
Reboot.
Upon boot up after the POST (the memory check and the *beep*) start tapping on the F8 key.
You will get a boot menu.
Choose #3 safe mode. When you get there, remove the scanner software from add/remove programs in the control panel. After that is done, attempt a proper boot into normal mode.
If you are still receiving error messages, boot back into safe mode and try system restore (start>>programs>>accessories>>system tools>>system restore) to run your computer back to a date before you installed the software.
If none of this works, post back. Older software will sometimes attempt to place entries in the autoexec.bat and config.sys files. ME doesn't like that. If, after removing the software, you are still unstable... we will have a look at your environment varibles and see if we can manually remove it from the registry.
On a side note... which HP scanner are you attempting to use?
