Hi there
I have a strange problem here. recently my msn messenger on my gf's laptop started acting up. She can log in (kinda) but it goes as far as displaying her contact list and then freezes... it doesn't even do that little pop-up window to tell her how many emails she has.
Then she has to do a ctrl-alt-del, and close msn msgr via the task manager. when she does that, then an error msg comes up sayin that msn encountered problems and asks if we want to debug or send microsoft the error details.
this is as much information i can get from the error details (i can't copy an paste em):
modver:6.0.2800.1106
offset: 00006cb0
appver:6.1.0.211
modname: wininet.dllThe funny thing is, if i log in with my account, then it's all fine.... an if she logs in with her account on a different computer, thats all fine too...
its just if she logs in with her account on that one laptop...
if anybody can help with this then that'll be great.
(ps. if possible, getting a new account an transferring the contacts isn't really an option cos she has... a LOT of contacts....)

It's possible her profile for that user is corrupt.
Go to the Registry and do a search for her login name (MSN Messenger login) in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger. Delete that user name. There are other keys that reference that login, and you may have to delete those as well.
Then, have her log back in.

thanx. I tried this and it did work but after a while the problem keeps comin back. i have done the above solution 4 times now. is there some other problem that could be causing the profile to go corrupt?
Thanks again.

ok well if its the same fault as i had with msn which i must admit it does, the only way i could sort it properly was to remove my win xp service pack 1 from my system as it was the only thing that had changed on my computer at the time of the error occuring. This may not be the solution to your problem as i dont know the operating system you are using and i am just giving this info as it sounds almost identicle in the ways you have described.Anyways the problem was cured for me and i just downloaded the full service pack from another site at 125meg which installed perfectly and resolved my situation.I did however try to get it from microsoft's site again but with same results before this full install so it maybe a bug of some kind.Hope this was of use to you or someone with the same problems.
