msn messenger won't install

I have just loaded a windows update. my msn messenger stopped working. i tried uninstalling and downloading a new version. howver it won't install. it gives error: could not open key: unknown/installer/assemblies/global verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel.
it the gives error: msn messenger setup has failed with error code 1603. please go to the msn messenger web site and download the software from there.
I have done this several times but always get the same error.
