I have to install Paint Shop Pro and got this same problem someone on here had a few months ago..the problem was:
Every time i try to install certain programs i get the message The MSIEXEC.exe file is linked to missing export MSI.DLL:222. So I tried updating my windows installer, but when it restarts, before windows loads another message "windows can not upgrade the file %1 from %2" and it never gets upgraded. Can someone e-mail me with a solution to this problem?Am seriously pulling my hair out! Thanks!
Arwen

Use your boot disk to boot into DOS. Then type the following and hit enter after each line:
cd windows
ren wininit.ini wininit.oldRemove the floppy disk and hit ctrl alt del to reboot.

If that has not effect, try one of the following:
1. From Start > Run enter
c:/windows/desktop/instmsia.exe /T:c:\msi\ /C(assuming you downloaded the installer files to the desktop)
Or
2. From a dos prompt, enter the following 4 commands
Cd\Windows\System
ren Msi.dll msi.old
ren Msiexec.exe msiexec.old
ren Msihnd.dll msihnd.oldAnd, do the Installer upgrade again.

i have been trying to install isa firewall client server but i get the message "this program has performed an illegal operation"
msiexec.exe ... and setup process aborts.
tell me what should i do

In a problem similar to farheen's on 3-12, with a twist. I was able to install ASF's GEM downloaded plugin but when I tried using it, I received the 'illegal operation' response.
I uninstalled. Subsequent attempts to reinstall result in the setup process aborting as soon as the msiexec pop-up appears.

Ihave to install a video camera, and every time i try to install the cd i get the massage:the msiexec.exe file is linked to a missing export ms.dll;222.So i try updating my windows but it still does not work. Can someone e-mail me with a solution for this problem. Thanks Chris

I had the same problem:
"MSIEXEC.EXE file is linked to missing export MSI.DLL:222"
And when I tried to upgrade Windows Installer I got this error message during the boot sequence:
"windows can not upgrade the file %1 from %2"
I found out that the file, which can not be upgraded is in the System Restore. So I purged the System Restore and since then I was able to upgrade Windows Installer without any errors and subsequently install new programs flawlessly.
To purge System Restore:
1. In Control Panel doubleclick "System"
2. Click Performance Tab
3. Click "File System"
4. Click "Troubleshooting"
5. Check "Disable System Restore"
6. Restart computer
7. Repeat steps 1 to 4
8. Uncheck "Disable System Restore"
9. Restart computer
System Restore is now purged.
NOTE: By doing this you will lose all saved Restore points! But unless you really need these restore points this should be no problem.
Good Luck, Alois
