If I access "Help/About Internet Explorer" the version number is shown as 5.50.4807.2300Ic but when I go to the site below a greeting and introductory message tells me I am using version 4.0 User Tips for Outlook Express So which is correct?

I would say the one your machine shows is correct. At least it seems logical that the site would report it incorrectly as opposed to your pc jimi_l

Thank you Jimi... It seems strange because some few days ago I downloaded and installed IE 5.5 Service Pack 2 or at least I thought I did because it went through all the install motions. My download history at M/Soft shows it as having been installed so I'm blowed if I know!
Maybe I'll have to go thru the motions again.

While in IE, click on HELP and choose Aout Internet Explorer. Whatever it shows is the version you are actually using. It may be that you have had an incomplete installation and that your old version is still your default browser. When I upgraded to IE5 from IE4, there were no errors reported and the install indicated that it completed successfully; however, IE4 was still my default browser. I had to restore to an pre-IE5 point and reinstall IE5 before it became my default.

Hi Ewen,
The site is clearly wrong. I have a good instal of 5.5 working for ages and it tells me I have 4.0.

Actually, what it means is 4.0 compatible, then it shows your real brower version.
for instance 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0
means that you have MSIE 6, but what is important is that it is compatible with 4.0
