My computer hangs up. I hit control-alt-delete and it highlights msgsrv.32 and says (not responding).. Any solutions?

Run a virus scan at, if not recently:

MicrosoftMsgsrv32.exe is a program that runs invisibly on the Windows desktop and performs several background functions necessary for Windows operation. These functions include:
· Mediate Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating system.
· Coordinate automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally restoring the Windows versions of those files.
· Display the initial logon dialog box if networking is enabled.
· Play the system startup and shutdown sounds.
· Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at shutdown.
· Run the shell program (usually Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell if it fails to respond.
Note that last one! It’s probably the function that is hanging most often when your system freezes due to an error — in some other component of your computer — for which MSGSRV gets the blame.

Could you say more about your PC symptoms?

It all started when my son was playing a Reader Rabbit 1st grade game. when I got to computer it was locked up. Restarted, and it freezes. Thats when I get the msgsrv32 not responding. I used recovery disk and reinstall all my programs but same thing.

Don't know if it will help, but check them out anyways:

There is a pretty good MSKB article as well:

This message can be caused by sever things and it may even happen right after you reinstall your opperating system. One thing you can try on the newer os's is put in the os cd and boot to it and start what looks like a reload but it will come up with a message that says something like start up has detected a damaged version of your os and it will give you the option to repair it.
that should fix it but if that doesen't do it there may be something wrong with either the hard drive , the windows cd , or the video card or driver.

I've been having trouble too. Last night, it went through 20+ bad start up's. On some the computer would restart itself, where I couldn't see the error, and others where a 'blue screen' error that pointed to the same vxd. Sometimes, I'd get as far as the password screen, but the video mode was a.f.u., and it would restart itself. This morning, it started up like nothing was wrong. I'm suspecting a video driver problem at the onset of a chip over heat.

It all started when my daughter was playing a Reader Rabbit 1st grade game. when I got to computer it was locked up. Restarted, and it freezes. Thats when I get the msgsrv32 not responding. I have reinstalled windows through a start-up disk as running the windows disk at start up it won't install it freezes.
