Comment:

First off I have a Dell Dimension 4300 with Windows ME, Intel Pentium 4 and 256 Mb SDRAM.

It is about one year old and keeps freezing up so I tried to clean up using MSCONFIG. The only way I can get my changes to take affect is to leave it in selective startup. If I try to go back to normal startup it will reselect all files in system configuration. If I leave it on selective startup it runs a little faster and crash less but not much.

I find it hard to believe that a pentium 4 with 256 SDRAM cannot run faster.

Thanks,

Marc

There's NO problem leaving it in Selective Startup. Once you click on "Don't show me this again" you'll never know you're in Selective Startup.

You can delete items from msconfig (StartUp Cop from PC Magazine, System Mechanic [free 30 day trial]) but why bother unless you know you'll NEVER use those items at startup?

Just a tip

Remove startup program is good as it decrease booting time to windows, but don't remove the necessary program that need to boot the PC. (Config.sys, etc)

Remove one of the virus program will decrease booting time much, but it will have less protection for your PC.

Hope it HelpS!!!

I don't use "normal" startup anymore, just "selective" and my puter boots faster and runs better. AND... You definitely must look at Trev's "tweaks", I learned a bunch of how a computer works & how to get it run well.
