I was poking around in Windows Explorer and I came upon a folder under Windows\MSAGENT\CHARS in this folder there are 3 items , 1 is AGENTCMD 1KB DAT File the other is MERLIN 2,130KB Microsoft Agent Character, the thrid is WIZARD 2,130KB Microsoft Agent Character ? I remember when I frist recieved my PC and booted it up for the frist time how the MERLIN WIZARD would walk you thru setting up your PC. I tried to open the WIZARD up by double clicking on it and nothig would happen, then I tried the chose program and tried to open it with explorer and still nothing ? My ? is once you have used this WIZARD MERLIN when you frist recieve your PC , does it have any use and how can you open it ? If its useless , is it safe to delete all or any of the files in this folder. I tried a search on this subject and found where to download the WIZARD MERLIN , however I could not find any answers to the ?'s I've posted here reguarding this subject. Just curious as to how to get the little guy with the hat working , or if he is somehow dead after you are done setting up your PC for the frist time . Some people say there are no dumb ?'s . I hope I have'nt just asked a couple ? Thanks to All ,Nick

Hi, Nick... I think you might have to download and install a programme like Talking Clipboard and Voice (American and English Accents) before it can work. After all they're meant to talk and gesture.

One of the voice programmes is Tru Voice(?),
I think. BonziBuddy (full of spyware, adware)
is once such programme with a ape who speaks to you. There are other MS Agent Characters too - found via Google. I'm no expert but hope info this might be helpful.

Nick, I suggest that you don't delete it because even though you're not using today, you might tomorrow...that's all. If you can download it easily from Microsoft, then delete the Character, NOT the file it's in.
Keep that...

Actually it can be fun using these Characters to read headlines to you, tell you the time, inform you if you've got email and read them out to you, stock headline news, prices of selected stocks, weather, etc etc...then for me anyway, after a while...I seldom used the programme which name escapes me now but vey similar to BonziBuddy the talking ape. I also at that time downloaded some pretty girl characters
speaking with American or English accents.

Fun for kiddies though...they might enjoy it.
Once again, Nick, hope this might be helpful.

Heres my guess....:)

It worked because the manufacturer of your computer had some sort of interactive program for helping you setup your computer.. HP has a lil albert einstein..

I would dig thru C:\ programs )maybe in the start menu) and see if you can find it.

Who makes your computer? This might help someone locate the information.

Thanks to everyone that replied to my ?'s reguarding the MSAGENT folder. My computer was put together by a company called Lan-Plus. My 1 year of support is up , so I doubt they would be of much help reguarding this subject. I just find it odd that Wizard Merlin worked when I frist booted up my PC and now it seems to just be useless space on my HD ? Its not like its a urgent problem or anything , its just frustrating not being able to find out how to make something that worked B/4 on your PC work again. I remember how my wife and I got a kick out of Merlin , and I thought it would be fun to see my 7 year old & 5 year old reaction to the wizard . Or perhaps they could use it to learn how to use the PC ? I will keep looking for answers and I will post back if I find any ! Thanks again to All that replied to my ?'s Sincerely,Nick

Here is a great application to help you use the Microsoft Agents (Merlin etc.) it's shareware though. You can also setup your website to use the characters.

The point of the Agent is for programmers to use its abilities in their programs to make it obey voice commands and other things. The Agents do a lot. The reason it worked when you first got your computer is because the people who made the setup that you went through, they programmed it in a way that is uses that Agent file. You can't do anything with it yourself unless you have some third-party program like MASH.
