Yes, definitely.
Select Options... from the Tools menu. In the General tab, make sure http://www.google.co.uk is set as your home page. Click the Web Features tab and make sure Block Popup Windows is checked.
I can't really explain it any further, did you mean something else?

Summary: You will need activeX for Windows Update (possibly other pages that only work with IE too), so no you don't need to remove activeX from your computer. ActiveX will not run in Mozilla or Firebird unles...
