(running Windows ME) prior to moving my new machine to a different home, the mouse worked fine. as soon as i set everything up again and turned it on, no cursor appeared.
rebooting in safe mode, the cursor did appear and the mouse worked fine. once again starting in regular mode, there was no cursor. the device manager gave me this error msg:PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port Properties Device status: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the file (vmouse.VXD) that loads the drivers for the device (Code 8.) To fix this problem, run Windows Setup again using your Windows CD-ROM."
after removing the mouse from the device manager and rebooting, it detected the mouse, installed new software for it, prompted me to restart, and still gave me the same error msg and no cursor.
re-installing Windows ME did nothing either.
NOTE: i posted this erroneously in the Windows 2000 forum already, and received the response "remove mouse and HID devices too." same end result, same error msg though.

a simple compaq pc/2... i've tried three different unlabeled ones also in the same port, with same results

in your post there I pasted link for a fix
download a logitech mouse driver for your non -logitech mouse or logitech, works for both and should solve this problem.

under windows me this is a common fault and the easiest way to resolve it, is to restore to an earlier state.
