Mouse scroll wheel stopped working

Specs: Windows ME, Intel Celeron 766MHz/64MB

I am trying to fix a computer whose mouse scroll wheel has stopped working after a cleanout of viruses, spyware, etc and a complete update of critical patches for Windows ME.

After a search I found this thread:
http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/44311.html
that may be helpful but would like further advice first.

In the other thread installing MS Intellipoint drivers solved the problem and I would like to know whether the MS Intellipoint drivers work with just an MS Intellipoint mouse or can the drivers be used for other mouses?

The computer is an HP Pavilion 8831 but I am not sure what the mouse is and am wondering whether to download and try the MS Intellipoint driver or whether to try reinstalling the mouse driver from his recovery disk.

FoxyMX, FWIW, sounds to me like something wiped out the mouse driver along the way. I'd use the recovery disk first and then, if that fails, see what M$ has to offer.
Another thought (???) is restore. Dunno if that would do the job or not, but maybe? If that works, be aware that your changes won't be effective unless you get them again.

Hi,

I've found that the MS Intelli mouse drivers worked with both HP & Logitech wheel mice.
