Ok, I have asked about this problem before, but maybe I have more info now since I have been fiddling with this problem for a while. I have seen similar problems but no solutions. Maybe this time....
Ok after being on the computer for a while the mouse freezes and you can only get out by restarting the computer. Ctrl-Alt-del shows msgrv32 (not responding) If you go into control panel/system/device manager/mouse there are 3 entries: HID-compliant mouse; Microsoft PS/2 Port mouse (INtellipoint); and Microsoft USb wheel mouse optical(Intellipoint). The PS/2 has a yellow exclamation point on it. I have a Microsoft Intellipoint optical mouse connected via USB. I have updated the mouse driver. I have done the vxd extracting thing, I have done everything short of formating and reinstalling. Any ideas here?

try this.....
on a blank space of your desktop, press the right mouse. select "properties". click the "settings" tab. at the bottom right of the little window, click "advanced". select the "performance" tab. slide the hardware acceleration slider down one notch. click "apply" then "ok".
i think you may have to re-boot.
this worked for me in the past, the problem is with your graphics card.
let me know if this works.

One of many suggestions:

is there a particular program your running when you get this error?

Thanks I think I will try them one at a time. There is no particular program that causes this. Usually we are online, but it has happened playing solitaire too, so I don't think it is that. I have removed the mouse drivers and the mouse won't work. Than I restart and all three are back again. I will let you know if anything works. Marilyn

I agree with major flam. The problem is most likely with your video card and not your mouse.
What kind of video card do you have?
The PS/2 port having an excalamation point in device manager when you plug in a USB mouse is a known "bug". It shouldn't be an issue at all:
Error Code 24 in Device Manager After Plugging in USB Mouse (Q257514)
Msgsrv32 is generally associated with hardware detection. If it is not responding, a driver or a device on your system is most likely in need of an update. From what you describe, my guess would be a video card, motherboard drivers, or a BIOS update to update the way ACPI is handling device queries (IRQs).
I have also seen this issue when someone has installed outdated/incompatible antivirus software. The VxD's installed with the antivirus take over the ME system and cause everything to hang when they query the OS (msgsrv32 not responding).

Newgrl, my video card is NVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64. Ok, so I changed the hardware accelerator down one notch and I have not had a problem, but my daughter just said that it froze for her this afternoon. My antivirus program is McAfee Virusscan version 5.21.1000.1. So What next? How do I find out if my motherboard needs new drivers or my bios needs upgrading? Marilyn

Start by upgrading the video card driver. First download the latest drivers for your card. Right click on My Computer, go to properties, device manager, expand the + beside display adapters (which means graphics cards), click on the driver listed, go to properties (bottom left), find the driver tab, click update driver, select specify the location of the driver, click on display a list of drivers in a specific location, click next, click have disk, and point Windows to the new drivers for your card and let it update. Reboot and see how it is. If you are still in trouble, download the latest VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers for your motherboard from here
http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp or, if you have an Intel chipset, download an updated ATA storage driver from http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/driver.htm If you don’t know which you have right click on My Computer, go to properties, device manager, expand the + sign beside system devices and scroll down the list. If you have a whole load of VIA stuff at the end, you have VIA chipset drivers. If still in trouble you may need a BIOS upgrade. This is a difficult operation and potentially disastrous if you have a power outage during it, so you may prefer to leave it to a technician. You can read about it here http://www.pcforrest.freeserve.co.uk/bios_flashing.htm

My video card driver was just updated so I have tried to update the VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers but I am having a heck of a time installing them. Their support forum hasn't been too informative. Someone else had the same problem and no one ever answered him. I haven't figured out how to post a message there. I am just tired, it is probably obvious! But anyway I am back here asking for help with installation. I downloaded the 4 in 1 it and the installation completed successfully, but when I clicked on "Finish" to restart the computer I got an error message that told me it had "not completed" installing. I waited and tried again, but no luck. I tried installing in safe mode with the same results. I have tried manually installing them, but I don't think i have the correct drivers installed, according to the dates of the drivers. Any help?

I don't know still if I got the VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers installed correctly. I fiddled with it alot and I apparently did something right, because I have not had the mouse or anything freeze up on me in a week!(knock on wood!) Thanks everyone. Marilyn

Hello , I have a similar problem tothe above which sometimes happens if I happen to be typin a text doc of any description , the mouse pointer jams and its all downhill from there on in. I'm keen to know if there is a way of unfreezing the mouse without rebooting or any other solutions.Either that or a list of common causes I can work through and resolve by elimination. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated thanks:)

Hi,
I have been facing this problem for
over 3 months, however mine is with
Windows NT. I have a Microsoft Intellimouse.
Every few days the mouse jams up, the
pointer kind of gets thrown around
when moving the mouse even slightly and
after some time it just freezes. A reboot
is the only way to get it working again.Did anyone find a solution ?
Thanks,
Navneet
