Hello,
I've been using Morpheus for few months now - never had any security issue. Maybe it's just luck... Scan your computer for viruses (especially the Morpheus shared folder) everyday and you should be fine:)
Enjoy!

P.S. It's almost illegal...but that is exactly the reason for it's vast resources...

The program Morphius is legal. The software, MP3's, etc. are very likely not because of a little thing called copyright infringement. Hence the ability to download things like Norton's 2002 without paying for it.

Be extremely careful when installing it. Morpheus is a great program and I use it almost everyday, but it likes to install useless crap when you install it. So make a note of what you have installed before installing it, and then pay close attention to the options during instalation. Once you've done that, go to Start -> Settings -> control panel -> add/remove programs, and look for anything new(besides Morpheus), then uninstall them. Alot of this crap is spamvertising software, and Morpheus includes it so that they can make money.

Problems come from failure to exercise reasonable care, not from using Shareware. Shareware is a Marketing & Distribution method not a consumer watchdog.

THE 7 HABITS OF EFFECTIVE COMPUTING:
1)back up your important data 2)Install and set up your OS or 3rd party system restore utility. 3)Install and use anti-virus software. 4) Get and use good manuals, CD's, websites and bribable geek friends to learn how to fix problems 5)Get and use a "firewall" program to know when and what your machine is communicating over the web. 6)Get and use an anti-spyware program to remove hidden tracking software. 7)Consider using a 3rd party uninstaller program--Windows 9x "add/remove" is not very powerful and often leaves junk all over your machine.

Downloading norton and not paying for it is definately a crime and definately not legal in the United States. Anyone who tells you its ok is mistaken. Its stealing, plain and simple. I dont live anywhere but here (USA) and have no idea what the laws are anywhere else.

This of course matters very little to most people, especially when its stealing from a "billion dollar company".

Anytime you download something from an untrusted source "some guys hard drive/where you got norton from" you take the risk of being infected by a virus. Always have your AV running and scan everything before opening or running it.

Im not in the software or music business and could care less about the profit margin. I just hope that someday i dont find myself working for free because of a creatively worded terms of use paragraph on a website thats stored on servers in armenia.

Very good advice for sharewarers Mark. I just copied it so i can plagerize it in an article on my site at a later date:)

well, whilst i was posting the original post on here, i was also downloading a program from morpheus. when downloaded, i scanned it and "hey presto" it contained a trojan horse. i used norton anti virus to both detect and remove the virus. how i ronic that i use a program i stole for nothing, to safeguard my computer.

1. morpheus has been un-installed and my lesson has been learnt.

2. i ALWAYS buy my software, and that won't change now.

3. Norton, your programs are priceless (no pun intended).

4. this website is also priceless, i just done some tweak's on my system that i found on this site...great stuff!

keep up the good work guys, and steal no more!

I personally believe Morpheus to be a very unstable, buggy program, not to mention the proliferate possibilities of invasion to your computer and your personal files by way of malicious viruses, trojans, spyware, and the like. While I'm glad you've learned your lesson about "free" (and probably illegal" stuff through filesharing, there are products available which allow you to selectively share your files with friends. FileTopia is one of them that allows you to block but selected users (no advice as to the stability - still testing it). I do know that once I completely uninstalled Morpheus, I rid myself of a veritable plethora of crashes, hangs, stability issues and conflicts.

A huge thanks to all the people who keep these boards alive - your experiences have indisputably kept my computer from flying through the window on too many occasions to count. ;-)

And an even grander thanks to Trev, whose advice on WinME has most definitely saved me from spending my kids' college funds on the phone with Microsnot.

Why does Morpheus not work when you use it on a computer connected to a network?

Is there a Morpheus version that I can use on this condition?

Yours Sincerely,

Kesio.
