I seem to have a DVD ROM that is temperamental!

Sometimes it only works with professional software CDs and not with my own created ones. (Both audio and data)

Sometimes it doesn’t read anything!!

Sometimes it auto starts and sometimes it doesn’t.

I have checked device manager and all seems to be well with auto insert activated. I note there are also 2 other boxes called “disconnect and DMA” and these are also checked. Is this correct?

You can hear the drive cough and splutter and often just give up.

Does this sound like mechanical or software related?

Incidentally, my lifesaver seems to be the CD Rewriter which is fine. What I didn’t realise was that you can use this to both access and play audio files or open pre recorded data files.

I foolishly thought that this was just for creating disks using my CD copying software. Was I wrong?

Forgive me for asking such basic questions.

Many thanks.

Antonio

Antonio...i had EXACTLY the same problem!

My old creative 48x CDROM would sometimes not read cd's whether they were burnt or originals and sometimes also claimed to not be able to read data but then simply pressing retry would get it to work!

By nature your burner is more sensitive anyway but you might want to ditch your faulty drive there as it sounds (like mine was) knackered!
