Have you tried connecting another monitor to the machine?

that problemsounds similar to the problem i was originally having back in december. check if when you have black screen, with yellow monitor light ctrl+alt+del will bring up a screen or if you can restart thet way. if so, safe mode right after, if you are able to get video, check your bootlog.pvt to see what didn't load. my system started doing that too, then i had system crashes over and over. ive been able to restore all except my color is still 16, and any driver i add ,gives black screen. if i knew what i know now, when the problem started, i probably would have been able to fix it. good luck!

I had that problem a while back. I replaced the power supply. That seemed to work pretty well. Also try shutting all the power off when you cycle the computer. At your surge protector. Let it sit for about a minute and then turn it all back on. That also worked well for me. good luck.
