Turning on the computer it will run through the bios, check for IDE, and then give or take a few seconds monitor will goto sleep and computer locks basically, lights on the cd roms stay lit. Running a Abit Ka7-100 w/ 1Ghz Athlon. Took out my memory to one stick, took out nic, and sound.
Was working good the other night, went to sleep and woke up the next morning and the monitor was in sleep, but cpu would not start up, rebooted same thing. Any suggestions?

something like this happened to my comp. once, and it was because my cpu wasn't properly cooled. the fan on the cpu had been disconnected from the power supply. if a cpu gets too heated it can cause a lock-up or reboot, and can eventually damage the cpu. so, that would be the first thing i would check. a virus is also a possibility. if you have virus software try booting from the virus software cd-rom. if you can get into your bios setup by pressing 'delete' during the boot process you can change the boot sequence under one of the options there. put the cd-rom as your first boot device. i use norton's anti-virus, and it allows a scan for viruses before going to the 'desktop'.
of course, if you already have a functional anti-virus program it probably would have caught it without doing any of those steps.
good luck. keep us up-to-date on your situation.

Think there is one beep on start up, will check again today, but what i dont understand more is that it wont just shut off at like one part, say right after mem check, but on next boot up it would goto the winme screen, ect.

right click on your desktop, go to properties, go to the screensaver tab, it should say something to the effect of power management...there you can adjust the sleep mode,,,etc,,etc

1. Cant get into windows
2. Tried booting from floppy, cpu shuts off before then or stops sending signal to monitor?
3. Like i said before it doesnt happen at the same time, which makes it more confusing.
4. On boot up i hear one beep as it loads short beep
5. CPU is cool to the touch.
6. Beats me :) going to try and switch out vid cards i guess.

Thanks for the input so far guess the topic title isnt really correct

x-faith, have you taken off the case cover on the tower? the cpu is located inside the tower on the motherboard. there should be about a 2 inch by 2 inch fan over it. if the blades are not spinning, this could be your problem. even a well cooled cpu usually runs pretty hot.
don't mistake the case fan(s) for the cpu fan. the case fan will be at the front or rear of the case, or both.
