My monitor when I turn it on, it has a thin straight horizontal line across the screen and that is all that I get. My friend thought it needed a bulb. But I have no idea, I was hoping someone could help me. If it is the bulb, how much does one cost and is it hard to put in?

Costs more to replace the video tube than it would be to buy a new monitor. But that sounds more like the vertical oscillator driver circuit went out. Long time to get the parts and the labor to fix it would be more than the cost of a new monitor.

Sounds like your system is about four years old (64mb Compaq) and that is past the average three+ year life of the typical cheap display unit used by Compaq.

Shop around for a new monitor.

Yep, classic frame timebase fail symptoms - new monitor time.
