Comment:

Last week the colours displayed on my 1 year old LG Monitor faded and are now showing differant colours. (Apart from taking the monitor to another PC) how can i tell if its the Monitor OR Video Card at fault ?

thanks.....Rob

"uppercrust" insists on giving useless responses.

You have either a failing monitor, cable or video adapter.

There is now no way to tell if the monitor and cable is OK, other than trying them on a working system. Conversely, there is no way to tell if the video adapter is working without trying a different monitor.

You could try a different video card in the system.

But at this point, unless you just happen to have the expensive electronic test equipment to probe the interface to find out exactly what is wrong, your only choice is to start swapping parts and sort out what the problem is.

thanks for your responses guys. To isolate a software problem, i formated the PC last weekend, reloaded WinMe, all 4yo workable drivers and the problem still exists. So to me, its a hardware problem.

when i cold boot each morning, the colours are perfect for 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes.....then blink, the colours "go off".

this morning, i cold booted PC only, and left the Monitor OFF for 45 minutes. Then i switched Monitor ON. The result was faulty colours immediately !! My thinking now is its possibly the video card/adapter causing the problem (?????).

but still am not sure, unless as you say Jack "swap parts".

regards

P.S. i have also stripped the box bare and cleaned/reinserted all parts. Checked AGP card was seated correctly, monitor cable connected firmly. Nup......still the problem.

i wouldn't expect that an LG (CRT) Monitor would "go off" when its only 10 months old.

Rob,

Just something to check/observe. If/does the video card have a fan. {most likely yes} Observe the fan, to see if it's moving/turning, while computer is running. The card might be getting overtaxed also.

good thought CrazyOne.

Yes the Leadtek 256 GForce DDR (32mb) DOES have a fan onboard. AND indeed, i have had so much trouble with the fan over the last 2 years (Card is 4yo).

occasionaly the fan spins very slowly and sometimes the fan stops altogether. when this happens i remove the card and (lol) dab a little household oil in the bearings with a toothpick.......verrrry carefully. Then the fan spins away ok.

i noticed just now that the fan is not moving and that the heat sink is hot. But i have had this problem many times before and it hasn't affected the colour display on this monitor or the previous one.

what i will do this weekend is visit my sister, and hook up my monitor to her PC....see what is displyed. If all ok, then perhaps yes, a new vid card (???).

regards
rob

Rob,

LOL, sorry, couldn't resist a little chuckle.
;-)

"But i have had this problem many times before and it hasn't affected the colour display on this monitor or the previous one."

That may be, but, it sure hasn't helped the.... Let's just say, it wasn't a good thing for the components. The heat, that is. Hmm, like for an example. You get a sunburn, ah, no big deal, right. It hurts a little, and peels. But, the pain goes away, and the skin is replaced. Now, if you were to get a burn, over, and over, and over again. That would/may result, .... I think you get my meaning ;-)

If you would of replaced the fan, at first signs of failure. You might of helped extend it's life span. Well, in theory anyway. And if that's the problem. A few dollars for a fan, would be cheaper than a new video card. I replace my fans on the motherboard, and such, each year. These computers, run 24/7. So, if you do shut them down. Sometimes, when you restart them, the fans are locked up :-) whoops And sometimes...nevermind :-)

Hope things work out for you. And if you do get a new one {fan or card}, keep an eye on the fan.

Later,
CrazyOne

Robmoski, I think your monitor is the one causing the colour problem.

I also had the same problem with an LG 17" Flatron CRT monitor (just 10 months old) and was giving similar problems as u have mentiond. At first I was also pointing the error on my Geforce 256DDR graphics card. I installed several versions of nvidia drivers but the problem wont go away. Then I called to an LG service center because its under warranty and they told me that some of the LG CRT monitors have soldering problems internally and need to be resoldered to fix the colour problem.

At this time my monitor is with the service center, I will let you know once they fixed mine.

thanks
